Abtswind: Winegrowing, Local History and Hiking

Abtswind can be explored during a stay through three main themes: winegrowing, historic buildings and hiking. The wine trail combines winegrowing with a wine education garden and distinctive trail markers. In the historic town centre, sandstone houses and church buildings shape the scene; elsewhere in the municipality, the Friedrichsberg with its hiking trails and the TraumRunde offer a specific route. Wine Trail and Winegrowing

Abtswind’s wine trail was opened on 11 June 1971 as Bavaria’s first wine trail and includes a wine education garden. Its vineyard path runs through the “Schild” and “Altenberg” slopes and is marked with barrel ends and trophies. The two slope names and distinctive trail markers give the vineyard path a specific connection to local winegrowing.

At the highest point of the trail stands an alabaster-built rotunda with a table and benches. On a clear day, the view from there extends up to 100 kilometres to the Spessart and the Rhön. The table and benches provide a place to sit; the long-distance view depends on good visibility.

Winegrowing in Abtswind covers around 70 hectares of vineyards. Typical Steigerwald wines grow on gypsum-keuper soils. The tourist information service of the market town invites visitors to discover and taste the variety of Abtswind wines. Together with the trail, this makes for a clear focus for guests interested in winegrowing and local wines.

Architectural History in the Town Centre

Abtswind’s historic town centre is home to magnificent sandstone houses. St Mary’s Church is located within the walls of the old fortified church complex. The sacred heritage also includes a late Gothic winged altar in the parish church of St Mary. These buildings and details offer different ways to explore local history, from the fortified church complex to the design of a single altar.

Both the Lower Gatehouse and the Upper Gatehouse stand on the main street. The cemetery features arcades and a wooden pulpit. The gatehouses, cemetery buildings and church complex thus form distinct stops on a tour of Abtswind’s architectural history, rather than focusing solely on the sandstone houses in the town centre.

The private Kaulfuss Herb and Spice Museum is housed in a 450-year-old barn. The building covers 1,000 square metres over four floors. The museum’s focus on herbs and spices is thus set within a historic barn building with ample space and several levels.

Friedrichsberg and Hiking

Friedrichsberg lies in the southeast of the municipality of Abtswind and is 463 metres high. In 1735, Count Johann Friedrich zu Castell-Rüdenhausen had Friedrichsberg Hunting Lodge built there. The mountain is also a meeting point for numerous hiking trails with natural woodland sections. It therefore offers a different focus for trip planning than the wine trail: hiking trails and woodland shape the connection to the landscape here, while the hunting lodge provides a historical point of interest.

One specific hiking option is the TraumRunde Abtswind. The route is 8.3 kilometres long and offers expansive views, plenty of nature and an opportunity to stop for refreshments at a winery. Parts of the route follow narrow forest paths and climb uphill. Distance is therefore only one factor to consider: because of these trail conditions, the TraumRunde is not suitable for pushchairs or walkers.
