City history in its towers, town hall and Main bridge
The Falterturm, formerly known as the “Falltorturm,” was built in Kitzingen between 1469 and 1496 as a watchtower on the outer city wall. The 39-metre-high Marktturm was originally part of the inner city wall and served as a watchtower and prison. The two towers therefore represent different functions and sections of the fortifications.
The town hall adds a distinctive architectural touch to the market square. This notable historic building from the 16th century was built by Hans Eckart von Schaffhausen in the Renaissance style. The Old Main Bridge, also known as “Pippinsbrücke,” has medieval origins and was first mentioned in a document in 1300. This date refers to its first documented mention and does not necessarily mark the beginning of its history.
City walks, guided tours and museums
The city walk takes you to the most important sights, charming squares and special corners of the city. Kitzingen also offers a public guided tour through the historic centre and across the market square, introducing visitors to the city’s history. Check the dates of the public tour before your trip.
At the German Carnival Museum, numerous interactive stations and spacious exhibition rooms invite visitors to explore Fasching, Fastnacht and Karneval in a playful way. The Deusterturm offers a different thematic perspective with its ornithological exhibition.
The Kitzingen tasting tour combines samples from local restaurants with an exclusive torchlit tour through the Deuster cellars. If this offer fits your plans, check the available dates in advance. This lets you combine your interest in food and drink with the choice of a guided tour, without confusing it with the public city tour.
The Main, boating and the outdoor pool
The Main near Kitzingen is marked with the “Yellow Wave” for canoeists and invites visitors to explore by boat. Canoes, Canadian canoes and kayaks are available to rent in Kitzingen. For practical planning, it is best to check the current offers from rental providers.
The Kitzingen outdoor pool on Mondsee Island is a seasonal option for family outings. It has a 50-metre swimming pool, an 80-metre water slide and a diving tower, and is open for family outings from May to September. Alongside city history and exhibitions, visitors can therefore also choose activities connected with the water.
The Kitzinger Land as a regional setting
Viticulture, a long tradition of gardening and a mild climate shape the Kitzinger Land region, which is known as a “wine district.” The Main winds its way through the area, while vineyards stretch alongside it. The Schwanberg is a prominent elevation on the western edge of the Steigerwald and rises 200 metres above the flatter landscape of the Mainfränkisches Becken.
The regional wine scene includes wineries, vinotheques, traditional hedge taverns and wine experiences. In GroĂźlangheim, the TERROIR-F site above the Kiliansberg vineyard at the HardthĂĽtte has a viewing platform shaped like a reclining Bocksbeutel wine bottle. The range of guided tours for visitors in the Kitzinger Land also includes vineyard tours with wine tastings.
For outdoor activity and scenery, the 15 TraumRunden trails in the Kitzinger Land offer another way to explore the region: they follow natural paths and routes with little asphalt, passing viewpoints as well as cultural and natural treasures. The Knauf Museum in Iphofen displays more than 200 casts of masterpieces from ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia and the Hittite Empire, as well as art from ancient Greece and Rome, ancient India, the Americas and Easter Island. At the Kirchenburg Mönchsondheim open-air museum, visitors can access numerous buildings with historic interiors.
