Hiking trails with different themes

“hochgehsprudelt” combines a circular route around Sternberg with a landscape of juniper heathland and stretches of woodland. Juniper heaths with diverse flora and fauna can be found along the trail. The stated distance of 8.7 kilometres and the option to walk the circular trail in either direction give you concrete points of reference for planning your own route, without specifying a walking time.

The Planet Trail focuses on the astronomical depiction. Its twelve stations show the solar system to scale. The route description gives a distance of 9.5 kilometres, plus an additional 7.5 kilometres for the return journey. If you plan to walk both sections, you can treat these as separate distances. Compared with the “hochgehsprudelt” circular trail, the theme is different and the stated distance is too.

Juniper heathland, woodland and spring

The landscape along the “hochgehsprudelt” hiking trail includes juniper heathland, diverse flora and fauna, and stretches of woodland. These are the natural features described along the trail, giving the route a different character from the astronomy-themed Planet Trail. The Große Lauter also rises in Offenhausen from a karst spring pool surrounded by old monastery walls. The spring and walls form a distinct point of natural and historical interest there.

The wider Reutlingen destination includes other nature and cultural attractions that complement Gomadingen but are located elsewhere. There are 15 trails in the hochgehberge hiking network in the district of Reutlingen. The route network may be revised, so this figure should be treated as a regional point of reference, not as a statement about trails directly in Gomadingen.

In Zwiefalten, the Church of Our Lady is at the heart of this historic monastery and pilgrimage town. It is one of the most significant examples of German Late Baroque architecture. Concerts are held in the church every year; specific dates vary and should be checked when planning a visit.

Lichtenstein Castle is also one of the destinations in the wider Reutlingen destination. It was built between 1840 and 1842 on the foundations of an older knight’s castle. The Hochgehträumt circular trail leads from the castle along scenic cliffs directly to Nebelhöhle Cave. Public transport does not go directly to the castle. The nearest bus stops are in Unterhausen (Oberhausener Steige), Honau and Traifelberg; you can hike to the castle from there. Check the current connections if you plan to travel this way.

At the Swabian Alb Biosphere Centre in Münsingen, interactive exhibits and audio and video presentations provide information about the nature, landscape and people of the biosphere area. Educational activities for groups include felting, planting, harvesting and cooking together; programme details may change. Münsingen’s Old Castle also houses the town museum, with exhibitions on the history and culture of the Münsingen Alb.
