Winter
Johann is integrated into the Stud Farm Cycle Route as a stud farm location. The route can be cycled in its entirety or in individual sections. Along the route, information boards and themed panels provide information about topics related to stud farms as well as other special features of the route. For hikes, three GPS tours have also been developed in St. Johann using the SPHÄRE service.
Gächingen is a starting point for cycling tours. The Hohe Warte observation tower offers views across the St. Johann region; in clear weather, the view extends beyond Reutlingen as far as the Black Forest.
Landscape
The expansive dry valleys of St. Johann channel rainwater through karst rock toward numerous springs along the Alb escarpment. Horse pastures and valleys are defining elements of the landscape, including the meadows associated with the Marbach State Stud and the Fohlenhof.
Culture and history
The town hall in Würtingen is a half-timbered building erected in 1744 as a farm and inn. St. Andrew’s Church in Würtingen contains valuable ceiling and wall paintings.
The listed St. Johann stud farm includes a horse fountain, a forester’s house, and a forest educational trail. The stud farm gave St. Johann its name because it is an estate and branch of the Marbach Main and State Stud. Horse keeping at the stud farm site dates back to the 17th century.
The late Gothic fortified church of St. George is considered a landmark of the municipality of Gächingen. Lonsingen is home to a restored bakehouse and the Roßbrunnen, a historic draw well. The local history room and the historic bakehouse in Bleichstetten introduce visitors to the culture of the Swabian Alb and local customs.
The Hagemann organ in Upfingen’s St. Mary’s Church was installed in 1777 and has largely been preserved in its original condition. Communal bakehouses characterize the streetscapes of the villages in St. Johann.
