Discover Heubach
Accommodation in Heubach
When planning a stay, you can first decide whether hiking and outdoor activities or culture and architectural history should take center stage.
Tours and activities in Heubach
The archaopfad ROSENSTEIN® is a 6 km circular trail on the plateau of the mountain massif. The route covers a total of 266 metres of elevation gain and includes 11 stops; it can also be walked in sections. The option to hike it in stages is useful if you do not necessarily want to plan your route as a complete loop.
The Heubach Tour offers more options, with 14 selected stages in Heubach and the surrounding area. Activities listed include hiking, cycling, jogging, Nordic walking, mountain biking and climbing. This provides a range of options, from walking and running to cycling and climbing. You can book scenic flights through Flugschule Heubach Charterservice GmbH; check availability directly with the flight school before your trip.
Nearby, the Rosenstein—with its imposing rocks, prehistoric ring walls, castle ruins and panoramic views—is a destination for an outing. These natural and historical features offer a different focus from the stages of the Heubach Tour. When planning your stay, you can therefore weigh up whether to focus on a route featuring several types of activity, the circular trail, or an outing centered on landscape and history.
Half-timbered architecture and Heubach’s history
Several half-timbered buildings make up Heubach’s town center. The local history museum, “Heubacher Geschichtssplitter,” complements this impression with the key themes of Heubach’s history, presented there chronologically. The town center and museum thus offer two different ways to explore the town: its architectural character and a chronological overview of its history.
A historical city tour takes you to the Blockturm and through the former weavers’ quarter; it also includes a visit to the “Anna Vetter” house. The tour’s timing depends on guide availability. The Vetter House is the former home of Heubach resident Anna Vetter. Its furnishings include furniture that closely reflects the home’s original living conditions. Visits are by appointment. If this house is important to your plans, be sure to allow for the necessary appointment arrangements.
The historical classroom in the Rittersaal of Heubach Castle also offers a distinct way to explore the past: the Förderverein Schwäbisch Gmünder Schulmuseum e.V. enables schools, teachers and other groups to experience a school lesson as it might have been around 1900. The classroom has been located in the castle since December 2008. This activity is intended for the groups listed; it is best to make current arrangements with the provider. Depending on your interests, you can explore local history through a city tour, a historic home, a museum or a group experience.
More destinations in the Ostalb district
For more cultural and nature-related experiences in the Ostalb district, there are additional destinations to consider as separate outing options. The Limes Park Rainau preserves a particularly high concentration of significant sections and individual monuments of the Limes. A reconstructed watchtower offers panoramic views over the Ostalb; the Limestor Dalkingen is a notable structure on the Limes route between the Rhine and the Danube. The Limes runs for about 6 km through the municipality of Rainau, in the districts of Buch, Schwabsberg and Dalkingen.
The hiking option near Rainau can also be described in specific terms: the Limes circular hiking trail is about 11 km long and takes approximately 2.5 hours to walk. It leads from the Limes wall and the Limes tower between Buch and Schwabsberg through the “Mahdholz” forest, following the Limes to the southern edge of Schwabsberg. This clearly distinguishes it in length and stated walking time from Heubach’s 6 km archaopfad ROSENSTEIN®.
For a focus on cultural history, Kloster Lorch is another option in the Ostalb district. It was founded in 1102 by Frederick I and his wife Agnes of Waiblingen as a burial place. The complex includes a medieval church, the cloister, farm buildings and the Marsiliusturm. A permanent exhibition presents 900 years of the monastery’s history, including its decorated Lorch choir books. Those more interested in industrial heritage can explore a different subject at the Tiefer Stollen visitor mine: the mine train travels past mineral deposits and small stalactites into sandstone halls covering 2,500 m² and located 100 m underground. There, a multimedia show introduces the history of ore mining in the Aalen area.
In practical terms, Heubach itself combines a circular trail, a variety of activities and local history. Other destinations in the Ostalb district add their own hiking, monastery and mining themes to the selection. Choose your accommodation search based on which of these interests you want to shape your stay.
