Lonsee is located on the Swabian Alb, among juniper heaths and woodland, at the beginning of the Lone Valley. Lonesee, viewpoints and traces from different eras give the town a variety of facets. If you are looking for accommodation in Lonsee, these themes can help you decide what you would like to explore during your stay.

Lonesee and the landscape

Lonesee has been here since 1978. Bodies of water like this are rare on the Swabian Alb, and waterbirds in particular use the lake. A diverse range of plant and animal life has also become established here. A discovery trail at Lonesee focuses on water and raises awareness of this sensitive habitat. The lakeshore can therefore be viewed not only as a scenic outlook, but also as a habitat.

The lake underwent extensive renovation in 2014, including the construction of a dam and an island, to protect its water balance. The Lone flows into Lonesee via a waterwheel. These structures give the watercourse a visible form. Those interested in the landscape can look beyond the lake itself to its design and the inflow.

The surrounding area includes juniper heaths and woodland. On the juniper heaths near Lonsee, pasqueflowers bloom profusely in April in sunny weather; flowering therefore depends on the season and the weather. Salachberg is a viewpoint overlooking Lonsee and the surrounding area. These natural features offer a different point of interest when choosing when to travel than the town’s history.

Source area and traces of the past

In Urspring, the Lone rises from a spring pool at an elevation of 562 metres above sea level. The pool is six metres deep and has a diameter of ten metres. These details make the spring a specific point of reference for the valley at whose beginning Lonsee lies. The river thus links the description of the local landscape with a named source.

The Roman Road also offers a glimpse into the past. It begins at the town hall in the centre of Lonsee. The Roman fort “Ad Lunam” can now be identified in the landscape only by the rectangular arrangement of the hedge strips; an information sign describes the Roman site. The fort is dated to the period from 81 to 160 AD. Its present-day appearance is therefore shaped by the remaining hedge forms and the information provided on site.

The town’s history also includes the Protestant St. Mary’s choir-tower church, built in the mid-19th century. Oil paintings of the twelve apostles by Christoph Nikolaus Kleemann hang on its north, east and south walls. Each of the paintings on wood measures 77 × 68 centimetres. Another striking work is the wooden sculpture “Stone Age Man at Lonesee”: it weighs 17 tonnes and is six metres high.

More places of interest in the Alb-Donau district

The Alb-Donau district also offers other nature and cultural attractions. The 20 “Ice Age Trails” are six to 14 kilometres long and suitable for day hikes. There are also the family-friendly “Ice Age Tracks,” ranging from one to six kilometres, as well as the Meditation Trail for multi-day tours. As attractions in the Alb-Donau district, these different lengths and types of routes can help you decide what kind of outing to plan.

The Hohle Fels cave near Schelklingen, a UNESCO World Heritage cave, is also in the Alb-Donau district. The “Venus of Hohle Fels” and the “Vulture Bone Flute” were found there; both are about 42,500 years old. This archaeological site adds a far-reaching perspective on human history to the region’s cultural attractions.

The places and landscapes mentioned offer various points of interest for planning your trip: the lake and its habitats, the viewpoint, the spring landscape or historical traces.
