Landscape

The area of Le Bois extends over the ridges above Lac de la Coche to Pas de Pierre Larron at an elevation of 1,789 meters. The municipality covers the Sècheron basin, through which the outflow of Lac de la Coche runs. The Sècheron rises at an elevation of 1,611 meters below Mount Longe-Chat, runs for 3,200 meters within Le Bois, and flows into the Isère at Aigueblanche.

Part of the Nant Noir runs through the municipality of Le Bois and forms the boundary with Bellecombe. The slopes of Le Bois formerly had vineyards, orchards, and pastures; Gouche Noir was considered the most widespread grape variety.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Le Bois dates from the 17th century. Its altarpiece was renewed in 1694. The church stands on a rocky promontory, far from the other villages. From there, it offers a view over the entire Aigueblanche basin and the surrounding peaks.

The Château de Le Bois dates from the 15th century. The former residence of the feudal lord, a round tower, a spiral staircase spanning three floors, the main building, and a square tower have been preserved. The château is privately owned.

The Lyon–Milan Roman road ran at the foot of Le Bois along the left bank of the Isère. A military milestone at La Pierre in Sainte-Hélène-du-Bois marked its route.

Water and Trails

The La Coche dam is located in Le Bois at an elevation of 1,401 meters. The La Coche hydroelectric power plant uses reversible turbines to pump and generate electricity from water. The Barrage d’Aigueblanche spans the Isère between Aigueblanche and Le Bois and is visible from the RN90 national highway.

The 2026 summer program included guided tours of the La Coche hydroelectric power plant in Le Bois. The walking trail to the Morel waterfalls passes through Le Bois.
