Culture

The church of Saint-Clément preserves several remarkable details. The coats of arms of the Flandin cardinals are carved above its entrance door. Inside, there is an richly decorated pulpit dating from 1874, featuring depictions of the four Evangelists. The very old baptismal font supports the altarpiece and is decorated with a rare interwoven motif known as the Solomon’s knot.

The surrounding area is also home to historic buildings. “Ruins du château de Mézanc” is a ruin near Saint-Clément. The ruins of “Ancienne Chatreuse de Bonnefoy” and “Église Saint-Philibert des Estables”, a church, are located in the same area. The wider region around Saint-Clément is also home to “Abbaye de Bellecombe”, a ruin.

Nature

The Sentier d’Éole is a 5.5-kilometre-long path that runs along the foot of the wind turbines. From the Saint-Clément viewpoint, the view extends from the Alps to the Gerbier de Jonc.

The “Les coulées basaltiques” area in Saint-Clément comprises more than 11 lava flows from the Mézenc massif. They accumulated on top of one another over millions of years; erosion of the valleys created the high plateau. The Sentier géologique – N°26 leads to this geological landscape, where a unique superposition of 12 basalt flows can be seen.

The nearby area includes Mont Signou, a mountain. Roche de Borée, a mountain, Serre du Truc, a peak, and Mont Mézenc Nord, a mountain, are also located near Saint-Clément.

White stonecrop grows on basalt slabs along the geological path in Saint-Clément. It serves as a host plant for the rare Apollo butterfly, which can be observed in flight with a little luck.
