Culture and history
The Théâtre Jeanne d'Arc was built in 1935 by the members of the Société Catholique de Gymnastique “l'Alerte” and has been a municipal theater since 1979. At Espace Louis Chanel, the remains of the Darblay paper mill, including a Télémechanique pillar and vault caps, are now part of the cultural heritage.
The comic trail Sur la piste de Martin leads through Bellegarde's architectural heritage with 20 panels distributed throughout the town center.
Nature
A landscaped path leads to the Pertes de la Valserine, where the river's water disappears into a bottomless chasm and re-emerges beyond a labyrinth of limestone gorges. The Valserine was the first French river to receive the “Rivières Sauvages” label.
The Sentier des pertes de la Valserine has several footbridges for walking along or crossing the river, as well as a picnic area.
Paths and walking routes
The Voie du Tram was decommissioned in 1940; since 1991, it has been restored between Bellegarde and Chézery. Along the Voie du Tram, hikers can discover information panels about the history of the tramway.
The TGV station Bellegarde-sur-Valserine is mentioned at the Sentier des pertes de la Valserine; for getting around the Haut-Jura, visitors are referred to the mobility portal reshaut-jura.fr.
