Culture and History

The heritage site “Les charbonnières de la Combe de Canaud” comprises the remains of charcoal-burning sites from the 18th century. Tourreus is a fortified protohistoric settlement with stone towers and rock shelters. Ceramic remains and a human skull dated to 3,000 BC were discovered in the Notre-Dame Cave within a stone tower at Tourreus.

The St Jean Chapel is located at an altitude of 1,040 metres on the foothills of Mont Ventoux and is the only one that is still visited. The Saint-Jean-du-Désert Chapel has been documented since 1154 under the name Sancti Johannis in territorio Villelonga in Monte Ventorio; Saint-Jean du Désert is also the highest-altitude of the chapels mentioned.

Landscape

The Combe de Canaud is one of the wild gorges of Mont Ventoux and was once a route used by shepherds and charcoal burners. The ochre-coloured and orange façades of Flassan can take on pink hues at sunset.
