History

The Église St-Pierre-sur-l'Hâte has been mentioned since the 12th century and was rebuilt in the 16th century. In 1685, it was divided between the Catholic and Protestant communities.

The underground tour of Tellure follows an 850 m route through galleries created by people in the 16th century. A visit to Tellure also features life-size scenes depicting the everyday life of 16th-century miners.

The Saint-Louis Eisenthür Mine offers a half-day underground exploration through galleries created in the 16th century. The exploration leads to the Salle de l'Avalanche, the meeting point of three former silver mines in the Vosges Massif.

Tellure is a tourist complex built on the largest man-made underground cavity in the Vosges Massif, the Saint-Jean Engelsbourg Mine, which is also known as »La Colonne Saint-Jean«.

Culture

The Carrefour Européen du Patchwork features more than 30 exhibitions by international artists. The event takes place every year in September in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, Sainte-Croix-aux-Mines, Lièpvre and Rombach-le-Franc.

The Tissage des Chaumes continues to operate in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, producing high-quality fancy wool for European haute couture houses.

The turret houses of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines mark places of power in the townscape and are visible only on the Alsatian side of the town.
