Culture and History

Construction of St. Bartholomew's Cathedral began when the city was founded in 1295 and was completed in the early 16th century. The upper galleries of the Great Synagogue house the permanent exhibition “Tady žili Židé.” The Semler Residence is the only realisation in the Loos style based on the Raumplan principle and can be visited on guided tours.

The historic underground visitor route is approximately 800 metres long and extends 9 to 12 metres below ground. At the Puppet Museum, you can move puppets and put on your own play.

The Romanesque Rotunda of St. Peter and Paul is one of the oldest surviving church buildings of its kind in the Czech Republic. The amphitheatre at Plzeň Zoo hosts falconry demonstrations featuring birds in flight and explanations by a falconer. The Techmania Science Center is housed in historic buildings of the Škoda works. Its offerings include interactive exhibits, a 3D planetarium, workshop and laboratory programmes, films shown on an interactive globe, and science shows.

Large wooden barrels are still used in the brewery cellars to produce small quantities of Pilsner Urquell. The tour of the Pilsner Urquell Brewery includes a tasting of unfiltered, unpasteurised beer drawn from oak lagering barrels in the historic brewery cellars.

DEPO2015 is a cultural venue for exhibitions, conferences, events and festivals. The DEPO Street Food Market, with food stalls and food trucks, takes place there.
