Culture and History

Zákupy Chateau contains a passenger elevator dating from 1870, considered the oldest surviving elevator in the Czech Republic. The chateau includes a Baroque garden and an English park. Zákupy Chateau is a three-minute walk from the town square; there is an unattended car park below the chateau. Historically, it was the Habsburgs’ summer residence and preserves historically furnished rooms.

The exhibition at Vísecká rychta presents traditional ways of life of the people of Česká Lípa District. These include hop growing, grain cultivation, livestock farming, spinning, weaving and carpentry. The exhibition also focuses on folk architecture and forms of housing in northern Bohemia.

The self-guided tour of Bezděz Castle includes the chapel, the Royal Palace, the Burgrave’s Palace, the Lords’ Palace and the Great Tower. A boat trip on Máchovo jezero may also include views of them.

Novotný Glass in Nový Bor allows visitors to watch glassmakers working at hot furnaces and regularly offers glassmaking demonstrations. The permanent exhibition at the Nový Bor Glass Museum is organized by the techniques of engraving, cutting, painting, as well as hot forming and decorating glass.

Nature and Landscape

The Kokořínsko–Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area protects the landscape areas of Dokesko, Podbezdězí and Ralsko. Three protected landscape areas extend across Česká Lípa District: České středohoří, Kokořínsko–Máchův kraj and Lužické hory.

Česká Lípa District contains four national natural monuments: Peklo, a valley with rock formations and chambers carved into the rock, as well as Swamp, Jestřebské slatiny and Panská skála. There are also four national nature reserves: Břehyně-Pecopala, Novozámecký rybník, Jezevčí vrch, and Velký a Malý Bezděz.

The remains of an old mill are located at Dolanský rybník; there is a waterfall nearby.

Activities and Excursion Destinations

Equestrian tourism has developed in the former Ralsko military area.

A flat 20-kilometer cycling route begins at Zámek Zahrádky and continues to the Holanské rybníky ponds. In hot summer weather, the ponds along this cycling route offer a bathing spot. The path through the aforementioned valley also starts from the same point.

The Stezka hastrmanů trail in Brniště has mini playgrounds and is suitable for visitors with strollers.
