Wirtzfeld: Hedge Trails, Totemus Route and Woodcarving
Accommodation in Wirtzfeld
If you are looking for accommodation in Wirtzfeld, the area’s nature and cultural themes offer concrete starting points for planning your trip. The landscape of trees and hedges, the connection to water and sacred art appeal to different interests. The arboretum focuses on trees; the Hedge Experience Trail covers wildlife and the history of the hedge landscape in separate sections. A Totemus Route runs along Lac de Bütgenbach, while St. Anna parish church houses a distinctive carved group.
Tree Trail and Hedge Experience Trail
The arboretum is a tree trail created by ÖKLE together with the municipality on the RAVeL between Wirtzfeld and Honsfeld. This joint initiative combines an educational trail about trees with a clearly identified local project. The Hedge Experience Trail is laid out differently: it is divided into two sections exploring wildlife and the history of the hedge landscape. The arboretum therefore focuses on trees, while the hedge trail covers two distinct aspects of a landscape of hedges.
The “Animals of the Hedges” section is about 2 kilometres long. Interactive panels explain the wildlife found in hedges, and there is also a puzzle to solve along the way. This distance applies to the section, not to the entire Experience Trail. The panels and puzzle complement the distance information by giving a clear idea of the themes and activities included in this stretch. Comparing the trail themes makes it easy to distinguish between the tree trail, wildlife and the history of the hedge landscape.
Holzwarche, Lake and Totemus Route
The Holzwarche and Lake Bütgenbach are different reference points for finding your way around the area. Wirtzfeld is situated on the Holzwarche and close to the lake. The Totemus Route “Aventures dans le bocage: entre haies, eaux et forêts Natura 2000” starts in Erelsdell at the climate sign at 4761 Wirtzfeld and runs along Lac de Bütgenbach. Wirtzfeld’s connection to the Holzwarche and the route’s course along the lake describe different geographical relationships.
Lake Bütgenbach is partially protected by the Natura 2000 network; this protection applies to part of the lake, not its entire surface. The French route title refers to hedges, water and forests, while the described route highlights its connection to the lake. The starting point, lakeside route and limited scope of the water body’s protected status can thus be considered separate points of reference.
Carved Group in St. Anna
St. Anna parish church in Wirtzfeld houses a group depicting the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and Saint Anne. The group comes from Cologne, dates to the 15th century and is considered a jewel of Gothic woodcarving. Its subject, origin and date are thus tied to a specific work. The three figures bring the religious subject to life; the Cologne origin and dating add an art-historical context to the description. The term Gothic woodcarving also refers to the work’s material and style. The group is therefore a distinct cultural highlight alongside the landscapes of the arboretum, the hedge trails and the Totemus Route.
