Schönberg lies in a hilly landscape of forests and meadows and stretches along the Our River, with its numerous wetlands. Those looking for accommodation in Schönberg will find an ideal base for experiencing nature, hiking, cycling and enjoying a peaceful stay in the central Our Valley. The village is considered one of the oldest villages in this valley and combines scenic surroundings with regional history.

Nature and routes around Schönberg

The landscape can be explored along a variety of routes. The Nordic Walking Park in the upper Our Valley comprises four trails ranging from 5.3 to 13.5 kilometres in length and with varying levels of difficulty. This allows you to plan your day according to your preferred trail length and level of challenge, without having to commit to just one type of route.

The Großweberbach Valley can also be explored along numerous hiking routes. The Großweberbach nature reserve covers more than 20 hectares of stream floodplains. In the upper reaches of the Our, largely untouched meanders have formed, providing a habitat for numerous species. Another landscape-focused option is the Genusstour 05, which follows the Kleinweberbach through hay meadows, mixed forests and streams. The GR 56 hiking route from Schönberg to Burg-Reuland passes through the Our Valley.

Discover Schönberg by bicycle

Cyclists have several documented connections and directions to choose from. The Vennbahn connection cycling route from Schönberg to Steinebrück starts in the holiday resort of Schönberg and runs from there along the Our towards Amelscheid. The cycling route from Schönberg to Steinebrück connects to the Vennbahn, the RAVeL cycling network and the Eifel-Ardennes Cycle Route. From Steinebrück, the latter continues towards Burg-Reuland and St. Vith. When choosing your accommodation, check which route length and onward journey best suit your travel plans.

Culture and orientation in the village

Schönberg's St. George Parish Church was completed in 1828 according to plans by the renowned Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The baptistery houses the Pietà of Schönberg, a statue of the Virgin Mary from the first half of the 16th century that was rescued from the castle chapel.

The seven Stations of the Cross are also part of the local points of interest. They were moved to their current location below Calvary Hill, behind the parish hall, in 1995. On the village square, six illustrated information panels explain the fauna and flora of the Our Valley in German, French and Dutch. Families travelling with children can also add the mini-golf course, which was completely renovated in 2023, to their plans. It is located by the church in the village centre, opposite the playground.

Which accommodation suits your trip?

For a hiking holiday, the routes through the Großweberbach Valley, the Nordic Walking Park and the GR 56 are the main attractions. On a cycling tour, the connections via Steinebrück and the route along the Our are important points of reference. Those wishing to combine culture and nature can include the parish church, the Pietà, the Stations of the Cross and the panels on the village square in their plans. Choose your accommodation according to the focus of your trip and the routes you would like to explore during your stay.
