Discover Rahier through its local history and several named walking routes. The Eglise Saint-Paul de Rahier brings together a protected church and cemetery complex, medieval features, and tombstones commemorating people from Rahier’s history. La Charmille and two other routes offer different points of interest: they provide specific names, a route length or a starting point to help you plan.

Church, Tombstones and Castle History
The Eglise Saint-Paul de Rahier and its cemetery were classified as a protected site in 1977. The church’s original tower dates from the 12th century, as does the Romanesque baptismal font. It consists of a basin with four heads at the corners. The tower and baptismal font are two distinct features with specific dates: one is part of the building, the other of its furnishings.
Two large black marble tombstones commemorate people from Rahier’s history. One commemorates Gilles de Rahier, who died in 1661, and his wife, Marguerite de Fraipont. The other is dedicated to Baron Godfrois de Rahier, who died in 1714, as well as his wife, Anne-Marie Philippine d’Argenteau, and the lords of Rahier, who owned a castle behind the church. The two years of death place the commemorations of Gilles de Rahier and Baron Godfrois in different historical periods. While the first tombstone names Gilles and his wife, the second dedication also includes the lords of Rahier and their connection to the castle behind the church.
A fortified structure, known as a maison forte, may have stood at the current site of the Château de Rahier at the beginning of the 14th century. The remains of the former fortified structure of Rahier are also found in the Stoumont/Rahier area. The tombstones, in turn, mention the castle behind the church. These are different historical connections: a possible early fortification at the current Château site, remains in the Stoumont/Rahier area, and the castle associated with the lords of Rahier.
Events and Walking Routes
The Ancien Château de Rahier hosts around twenty events of various kinds each year. If an event is a key part of your trip, check its date in advance. This lets you plan around a specific event date.
The “La Charmille de Rahier” circular walking route is 3.4 km long. La Charmille is on the northern heights of Rahier, near a remarkable panorama looking towards Stoumont and the Amblève Valley. The route length gives you a specific measure of the loop, while the location description adds the direction of the panorama. This gives you both a measurable length and a named landscape feature to help you orient yourself on this route.
The “Les castors de l'ancien château de Rahier” walking route starts at the Ancien Château de Rahier, Rahier 96, 4987 Rahier (Stoumont). Starting-point details may change, so check the address before setting off. The marked and guided “Le sentier des petits castors” route was created in Rahier for children aged 4 to 12. It is intended to introduce the village to local children and visitors. The route was newly set up in July 2024; check the current signage and access before your visit.
