Elsenborn combines winter activities with a varied landscape and regionally rooted festivals. The clearest connection to winter is the cross-country ski trails: they are groomed for both classic technique and skating, and offer loops of up to 14 kilometres. When looking for accommodation in Elsenborn, this allows you to tailor your stay to your own interests – from cross-country skiing and nature experiences to culture and regional history.

Cross-country skiing and other activities

In addition to cross-country skiing, the Herzebösch Biathlon Centre offers recreational athletes biathlon experiences with laser shooting, as well as shooting with air rifles and biathlon rifles. This provides a documented winter offering that is not limited to traditional cross-country ski trails. There are also various ways to explore the surrounding area outside of winter sports. Numerous short and long hiking tours can be started from Elsenborn. The routes are available for download as GPX files. The panoramic information board in Elsenborn provides practical orientation in the terrain; it stands together with a panorama hut near hiking junction 67. Herba Sana is located on a two-hectare site and contains more than 120 medicinal plants. The facility is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from 1 June to 30 September. At the request of ORTIS, Herba Sana offers guided group tours. For planning your stay, the clearly limited period during which this offering is available is therefore particularly relevant.

Landscape and documented access information

The Elsenborn military training area preserves a heathland landscape typical of the High Eifel, with open stream valleys. Most of the area has been included in the Natura 2000 programme because of its rare animal and plant life. Another landscape area is the Das Schwalmtal nature reserve, which extends across Elsenborn (Bütgenbach), Rocherath and Wirtzfeld (Büllingen). The 209-hectare Schwalmbachtal nature reserve lies in the Belgian-German border area; the Schwalmbach stream runs through the military grounds. Special restrictions apply to individual excursion destinations. The Bieley is a striking rock high above the Schwalmbachtal and offers a view of the meandering Schwalmbach. Access to the Bieley is regularly closed because of shooting exercises, as the rock lies within a safety zone of the Elsenborn military training area. This information is relevant to specific excursion planning and should be taken into account when choosing a date for your visit. The Hohe Mark is a beech forest with distinctive tree forms resulting from overgrown coppice shoots and is classified as a protected landscape area. Together with the heathland, the Schwalmbachtal and the Bieley, it forms a diverse landscape shaped by conservation and safety zones.

Festivals and historical points of reference

The fair in Elsenborn always takes place at the end of August and is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, the patron saint of the parish. The Lancier dance is the highlight of the fair and is performed in front of the church on the Monday and Tuesday after Mass. The Brigitta Festival also takes place in February in honour of Saint Brigitta, who is revered as Elsenborn's second patron saint. The area around the Truschbaum also refers to the history of the village. The Truschbaum is a historical point of reference near Griesdeck on Lagerstraße in Elsenborn. Nine boundary stones from 1791 marking the former border between Jülich and Luxembourg were re-erected around the Truschbaum. The historical boundary stones therefore explicitly belong to the former border and not to a present-day political border.

Travel and stay planning

TEC bus routes 390 and 394 serve Elsenborn several times a day. Route 390 runs between Verviers and Rocherath, while route 394 runs between Eupen and St. Vith. These connections help with travel orientation without demonstrating that accommodation is located in a particular area or that there is direct access to the cross-country ski trails. When choosing your accommodation, therefore, in addition to your preferred focus – cross-country skiing, hiking, nature or culture – the specific location and the appropriate connection may also play a role.
