Lake, woodland and activities

The Bütgenbach Lake was created by a dam and has developed over the years into a leisure destination. The Worriken Sports and Holiday Park lies on the shore, surrounded by woodland. The lake and its surroundings therefore bring together water, forest and leisure activities. The size of the lake gives you a clear point of reference: it covers 120 hectares.

Sit-on-top kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and pedal boats are available to rent at VENNtastic Beach. Rental availability may vary by season; if you have a particular watersport in mind, it is a good idea to check what is currently available in advance. The Worriken Sports and Holiday Park’s Vita programme also includes a high ropes course, a zip line and archery. The activities described offer a range of options, from watercraft to exercise and skill-based activities on land.

Nature trail and cycling route

The Mausheck nature trail leads through an oak forest, past a semi-dry meadow and wetlands. Along the way, you can enjoy a view of the Warche valley. Thousands of daffodils bloom in the wetlands opposite in spring; the usual flowering period is given as mid-March to mid-April. If you would like to see them in bloom, this timeframe can help you plan your trip.

For cyclists, Route 45a is a longer route through the region. It branches off from the Vennbahn cycle route at Weywertz and runs via Bütgenbach and Büllingen to Losheimergraben in Germany. There, it connects with the Kyll cycle route, which runs via Jünkerath and Gerolstein to Trier. Route 45a is 38.5 kilometres long and is a former branch line of the Vennbahn. Surface conditions and operating conditions may change, so check them before setting out. The distance given refers to Route 45a, while the Kyll cycle route continues the connection beyond it into Germany.

Historic walks and local history

Ten information panels on the Bütgenbach Historic Walk explain the history of the town and the lives and work of its residents. There is also a shorter 2.7-kilometre version of the walk. This difference can help with planning if you prefer a shorter route. A historic walk through Bütgenbach and Berg starts at the Bütgenbach Tourist Information Office. There are two routes; an accompanying leaflet uses a map to describe the way to ten stops.

The architectural history also spans several periods. Built in 1932 by Henri Cunibert in the neo-Romanesque style, St. Stephen’s Church contains old tomb slabs and the epitaph of Johann Reinhard von Bulich from the second half of the 16th century. Other features include the Reiffenberg epitaph, furniture from a destroyed 15th-century chapel and a baptismal font from the 13th century. The dates bring the different historical layers of the furnishings into focus.

The Bütgenbach Courtyard is a listed former castle courtyard dating from the 15th century, which has been restored several times over the centuries. The former Kirch House offers a different historical perspective: during the Ardennes Offensive in the winter of 1944/45, it served as the headquarters of the Allied forces. For information about walking and cycling routes, accommodation, food and drink, and places to visit, you can contact the Bütgenbach Tourist Information Office.
