If you are looking for accommodation in Bartholomäberg, you can plan your stay around cultural history, themed trails and winter activities. The village combines evidence of its mining history with short and longer trails. This makes it possible to put together an itinerary for a trip with varied interests that is not focused exclusively on a single activity.

Cultural History in Montafon

The Frühmesshaus Bartholomäberg Museum is located in a Baroque-era building and presents the history of Montafon. Its main focus is on the Bronze and Iron Ages as well as early mining. Its roots go back to Celtic times. The mining landscape on Bartholomäberg was entered in the monument register of the Republic of Austria in 2012 as an outstanding cultural monument and has been permanently protected ever since.

The parish church of St. Bartholomew is also one of the historical points of interest. It is a Baroque church with a medieval core. The historic Graß organ, built in 1792, is regularly played in the church. The stained-glass windows of the parish church of St. Bartholomew are also of interest: they were created around 1906/07 by the Tyrolean Stained Glass Institute in Innsbruck. Those interested in ecclesiastical architecture, organ music or regional history will find several different ways here to explore the history of the village.

Themed Trails and Mining

The Bergknappenweg connects the Litz Chapel in Schruns via Montjola and the church in Bartholomäberg with the Knappagruaba mining area. Numerous information boards along the trail provide information about the early settlement history and mining on Bartholomäberg. From the starting point at the Baroque church in Bartholomäberg, the Historic Mine can be reached on foot in about 50 minutes.

For a shorter themed loop, the Historical ArchitekTour Montafon / Bartholomäberg is a good option. The easy themed trail is 0.47 km long. Along 24 information boards, the Bartholomäberg Geological Educational Trail explains 1,000 million years of Montafon’s geological history. Families can also enjoy a puzzle adventure on the Gaglaweg, centered around the search for a lost treasure. The Gaglaweg backpack provided for this purpose can be borrowed for a deposit from tourism information offices or citizen service centers.

Hiking, Landscapes and Winter Trails

During summer hikes, you pass traditional Maisäß houses. From the hiking trails in Bartholomäberg, you can look out over the mountain ranges of the Rätikon, Silvretta and Verwall. Around Sasälla and Lake Fritzensee, ponds, hillside flat bogs and fens alternate. Together, they form a mosaic of different wetland habitats and complement the viewpoints with a different aspect of the landscape.

In winter, Bartholomäberg also offers snowshoe and winter hiking trails. This gives you a documented alternative to days on the slopes and allows you to plan your trip around winter activities in the landscape. A particularly suitable option for people with different requirements regarding distance and gradient is the short, largely accessible panoramic route. It leads from the parish church along the panoramic road to Hotel Fernblick and back. The route is suitable for wheelchair users, families with strollers and people who want to enjoy a leisurely outing without any inclines.

Putting Bartholomäberg in Context for Your Trip

When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you are primarily looking for historical insights, a themed trail, a longer hiking connection or a winter loop. The Alpabtrieb, the traditional descent of livestock from the alpine pastures, is also still a vibrant part of community life. It complements the permanently visible traces of the church, mining and landscape with a custom rooted in the life of the community.
