Winter outings in the Montafon region

Golm offers skiing and snowboarding in the region. The access point to the Golmerbahn cable car in Latschau is in Tschagguns. If you plan a trip there, arrange your journey and check in advance whether the facilities are currently operating. The 2025/26 Landbus timetable lists route 641 via Schruns, Vandans and Sankt Anton, and route 624 between Vandans train station and Sankt Anton. Check the timetable valid for your actual travel date.

The Gaglaweg trail and the history of gypsum mining

The Gaglaweg trail starts at the via ferrata car park. The easy, family-friendly circular route is suitable for strollers and is 3.5 kilometres long. The estimated walking time is around an hour and a half; the ascent and descent are each 65 metres. The route follows the stream towards Lorüns and returns via Lehmbühl, Prazalanz and the Almahüsli.

Along the way, you can learn about the local history of gypsum mining. Until the 1980s, gypsum stone was mined, sorted, crushed, fired and ground into fine gypsum. There is a special quiz for the Gaglaweg trail. Families can borrow the backpack equipped for it from Montafon tourist offices and service centres with a deposit. Before your tour, ask about current loan arrangements and trail conditions.

Waterfall and via ferrata

The waterfall via ferrata is located just above the village. A ladder climbs up beside the waterfall right at the start. The two rope bridges can be bypassed; the slightly overhanging crux is graded C/D. The via ferrata tour is listed as 2.68 kilometres long, with 371 metres of ascent and descent each, and a duration of two hours and 15 minutes. The route is closed from 1 December to 15 March. Plan your visit outside this closure period and check the current conditions before setting out.

Mining, the village name and the parish church

Sankt Anton im Montafon was founded during the period of ore mining at Kristberg and in Bartholomäberg. The first mention of the village name dates to a document from 1412. In 1650, residents decided to build a new parish church. This was in gratitude for the elevation of the church to an independent parish dedicated to Saint Anthony the Hermit. These historical records complement the history of gypsum mining with older traces of the village’s past.
