Snow Experiences and Transport in the Tux Valley

The Hintertux Glacier offers a snow experience every day of the year. In the Tux Valley, the Tuxer Sportbus transports winter sports enthusiasts with zero emissions; it is operated using seven modern electric buses. As fleet details may change, check the latest operating information when planning your trip.

There are also various options for hiking and cycling: the Tux Valley has 350 kilometres of marked hiking trails and 150 kilometres of mountain biking trails. The six themed trails of the TUX Worlds lead through the Alpine landscape of the Tux Valley. These figures provide an overview of what is available without suggesting that individual trails or excursions are equivalent.

Hiking Trails by Length, Difficulty and Route

The Tux Alpine Trail is a moderately difficult circular route covering 18 kilometres. It starts and ends in Tux-Lanersbach. Also moderately difficult, but considerably shorter and not a circular route, is the three-kilometre Rosenkranz Trail: it leads from the parish church in Tux-Lanersbach to the “Kapellstein” forest chapel on the Lattenalm. The two trails therefore differ in both length and route.

The Tuxbach Adventure Trail with TUX Worlds is an easy, ten-kilometre hiking trail that is not a circular route. It leads from Tux-Vorderlanersbach to the Hintertux Glacier cable car. If you are looking for a shorter circular hike, the Almrosen Trail is an easy 2.5-kilometre family-friendly circular walk. Its starting and ending point is at the Eggalm cable car’s mountain station, at an altitude of 2,000 metres. Seasonal lift access is relevant for this trail; check lift operations before your trip.

On trails described as one-way routes, the start and finish are in different places. Factor this into your day’s plans and check conditions for all routes, as these may change seasonally. A stated distance is not a walking time: the trail descriptions do not specify how long the routes take.

Nature and Culture in Tux

The municipality of Tux is part of the Zillertal Alps Nature Park. Among its special natural attractions is Spannagel Cave, the largest marble cave in the Central Alps. The meeting point for visiting the cave is the Spannagelhaus. You can take the gondola to the Tuxer Fernerhaus, then walk for ten minutes to the cave; check lift operations before travelling. The entrance to the Nature Ice Palace is a ten-minute walk from the Gletscherbus 3 mountain station.

The region’s architectural and cultural history can also be seen in specific examples: the Tux Mill dates back to 1839. Its restoration has preserved a piece of rural culture. The Mehlerhaus dates back to the 17th century. These two dates provide different historical context and do not place the buildings in the same period.

Plan Excursions to Suit Your Stay

When choosing your accommodation, it can be helpful to first decide which excursions interest you most. Compare the trail distances and whether they are circular routes, along with their respective starting and ending points; for the cave attractions, also consider the lift access described. This makes it easier to factor hiking, nature and culture into your stay based on specific places to visit.
