Ehrwald – Ski holidays between Ehrwalder Alm and Zugspitze

Ehrwald combines a clearly defined winter sports offering with a distinctive mountain landscape and several alternatives away from the slopes. The Ehrwalder Alm ski area comprises 27.5 kilometres of pistes and 13 varied runs. The pistes are located at an altitude of 1,100 to 1,900 metres. This provides Ehrwald with a clear basis for choosing accommodation for a ski holiday, without automatically implying a particular location of individual hotels in relation to lifts or pistes.

Skiing and mountain access in Ehrwald

The 8-person Ehrwalder Almbahn gondola takes guests from Ehrwald to the mountain station at 1,500 metres above sea level. From there, paths and tour options continue into the mountain landscape: the mountain station is a starting point for hiking, mountain and MTB tours. It is also possible to walk from there to Almsee. Proximity of all accommodation to the lifts should not be assumed. Ehrwald lies directly at the foot of the Wetterstein Mountains. This mountain range also includes the 2,962-metre-high Zugspitze. The Gatterl tour leads from Ehrwald on foot over the Gatterl to the Zugspitze. It is suitable exclusively for experienced mountaineers who are sure-footed, have a good head for heights and good physical fitness, and are equipped appropriately. This route is therefore not a general walking path and not a blanket alternative for every travel group.

Winter alternatives and excursions

For a stay in which not all travellers take part in the same winter sport, the illuminated valley run of the Ehrwalder Almbahn is a documented addition: it is used for tobogganing and is three kilometres long. Other routes through the landscape include the “Zugspitzi am Gaisbach” water adventure trail and the summer hike to Seebensee. The “Zugspitzi am Gaisbach” circular trail runs along the Gaisbach towards Seeben Waterfall and back via the alpine meadows. From Seebensee, the route can be continued to Drachensee. This information refers to the tour described in each case and does not replace a current assessment of the conditions. The history of the area is also part of the orientation. The “BAHNORAMA anno 1926” cable-car museum in the valley displays the original cable-car drive and a historic driver’s cab. The “Museum im Spinnhof” began operating as a museum in its current premises on 21 June 2020. “Bergfeuer Ehrwald” is a social practice in Tyrol and was included in the Austrian Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2010. Scheibenschlagen is one of the oldest carnival customs in the Alpine region and takes place in Ehrwald every year on the first Sunday after Ash Wednesday.

Accommodation, travel arrangements and different interests

The valley stations of the two lifts near Ehrwald can be reached by car as well as by train and bus. For choosing your hotel or accommodation, this means that travelling to the valley stations is generally documented as a factor to consider. Whether a particular property can be reached on foot, by public transport or only with additional transport remains open. The same applies to specific facilities, childcare, ski storage rooms or the distance of individual accommodations from a piste. In addition to winter sports, two differently classified cycling routes are listed at the Ehrwalder Wettersteinbahnen: the “Blue Bird Trail” is considered easy, while the “Bare Knuckle Trail” is considered difficult. For longer or cross-season stays, this provides another specific distinction between the documented activities, without implying a particular suitability for every travel group.
