When planning a stay in Plangeross, it is worth looking at the different profiles of the mountain tours, hikes and climbing options. The activities differ considerably in terms of time required, elevation gain and demands: alongside a several-hour tour to Plangeroßkopf, there is a 50-minute winter loop marked as closed, the very steep forest ascent on the hike to Kaunergrathütte, and several forms of climbing.

Hiking and Tours in Plangeross

The tour to Plangeroßkopf starts in Plangeross, leads to Kaunergrathütte at 2,817 m and then follows Alpine Club Trail No. 926 to the junction for Plangeroßkopf. A tour description published in 2015 gives a walking time of 7 to 8 hours and an elevation gain of 1,400 metres. Since the description dates from 2015, check the walking time and elevation gain before making concrete plans for the tour.

The hike to Kaunergrathütte is different from this tour: it follows a very steep ascent through the forest to Plangeroßalpe; the stream must be crossed twice along the way. Stream crossings and trail conditions depend on the weather. Take these particular features into account when planning and check the conditions before setting out.

The Plangeroß Loop is a 3.5 km winter hiking circuit with 60 metres of ascent and a duration of 50 minutes. It is marked as closed. Despite its comparatively short estimated duration, you should therefore not assume that it is available: check the current route status and seasonal availability before planning. This helps distinguish its time frame from the several-hour tour to Plangeroßkopf without overlooking the loop’s status.

Climbing: Rock, Multi-Pitch and Ice

The Plangeross Hexenkessel climbing area comprises around 90 routes and is recommended for experienced climbers. This indicates a clear experience profile; the approximate number describes the size of the area, not general suitability for every skill level. Check climbing conditions and route status locally.

The Kaunergrathütte MSL climbing park in Plangeroß lists 11 multi-pitch routes with grades from 1 to 6. A multi-pitch route extends across several consecutive pitches. The term therefore explains the type of route; together with the stated grade range, it offers a different point of reference from the approximate number of routes in Hexenkessel. The two figures refer to different climbing areas.

At Reiselehn near Plangeroß, ice climbing is available after an ascent on a ski tour to an ice gully with a steep middle section. Ice-climbing conditions and avalanche risk depend on the weather. The starting point for the Reiselehn ice-climbing tour can be reached by bus to the Plangeroß stop. Check the timetable for your travel date; the bus connection is a specific planning consideration for this tour.

A Historic Landmark in the Village

Plangeroß parish church is also a landmark that helps orient visitors in the village: it was built in 1765 to replace an older chapel and consecrated in 1778. Construction and consecration mark two distinct stages in its history. Alongside planning days of hiking and climbing, this history provides a cultural point of reference that differs from the tour profiles.

If you are looking for accommodation for your stay, first consider which activity will shape your daily plans. For Plangeroßkopf, walking time and elevation gain are key planning factors; on the hike to Kaunergrathütte, the steep forest ascent and stream crossings are part of the route profile. Climbing plans, in turn, differ depending on whether you choose rock climbing, multi-pitch climbing or ice climbing. This lets you weigh up the different focuses of your trip and take the relevant conditions into account when planning.
