Rosegger’s life and the museum in Krieglach

Peter Rosegger had a country house built in Krieglach in 1877, where he spent the summer months with his family. The Rosegger Museum in Krieglach offers a different focus: it explores the poet’s critical, political and self-fashioning side. The study and the room where he died have been preserved in their original state. The country house and museum therefore represent different ways of engaging with Rosegger: one is associated with his summer stays with his family, while the other takes a critical look at his person.

The museum is close to Krieglach railway station and can be reached on foot in five minutes. Check current transport connections before travelling. The walking time refers to the route from the station to the museum; it provides a specific point of reference for this visit.

Birthplace and forest school

The local poet Peter Rosegger was born on 31 July 1843 at the Kluppeneggerhof farm on the Alpl. The Rosegger Birthplace on the Alpl offers insights into rural life in the mid-19th century. The focus is therefore not only on Rosegger’s biography, but also on the rural way of life at the time.

Rosegger’s forest school was built in 1902 following a fundraising appeal by Peter Rosegger and now houses a museum. The classroom and Rosegger room have been preserved in their original state. The sequence of dates puts these places in context: Rosegger’s birth in 1843, the country house in Krieglach in 1877 and the construction of the forest school in 1902. This makes it possible to consider his origins, the summer months he spent with his family and the later school project as different aspects of his story.

Trails starting in the town centre

The Waldheimat Trail starts in Rosegger Park in the centre of Krieglach. It runs along Erzherzog-Johann-Straße and Grazer Straße, past the cemetery and Gölkkapelle, into the Freßnitzgraben valley and onwards to the Alpl.

The Krieglach–Malleistenalm–Hönigsberger Alm–Krieglach mountain bike loop also starts in the town centre. It crosses the Mürz bridge to the junction with the Mürztal cycle path R5, heading towards Alter Sommer.

The Himmel variant of the Peter Rosegger Memorial Trail is accessible by public transport. When planning your trip, you can consider this information separately from the walking time to the museum: one refers to access to a particular trail variant, while the other refers to the short walk from the station to the museum. Check current connections for your journey.

Leisure lake and choosing accommodation

The leisure lake in Krieglach has a water surface of approximately 50,000 m². Its approximate size gives the lake a distinct place alongside the historical Rosegger connections and the trails described here. When looking for accommodation, you can weigh these different interests according to your preferences: history, trails or the leisure lake. This lets you choose a location based on the things you would like to include in your stay.
