Townscape and Culture

The Oberzeiring townscape conservation area encompasses the historic town centre and the surrounding natural areas. The protected area therefore extends beyond the buildings in the town centre. Those interested in architectural and local history will also find specific points of interest in Oberzeiring: St Elisabeth’s Church, the Oberzeiring Theatre THEO and the Oberzeiring Show Mine Museum. Each offers a different focus and can be included in your stay independently of the others.

The museum also covers the history of the Zeiring pfennig. At a festival marking the start of the season, it was ceremonially handed over to the Oberzeiring Show Mine Museum with a deed of donation. This offers insight into the history of the collection; it is not an announcement of a current event.

Churches and Traditions

St Elisabeth’s Church, in the Oberzeiring cemetery, has 14th-century wall paintings. It stands on a hill at the eastern edge of town. Another religious route leads from Oberzeiring to Calvary Hill as a Way of the Cross. The Oberzeiring Calvary Church is privately owned and is not regularly open to visitors; it opens for Mass on certain days of the year. If you are planning a visit, check opening arrangements in advance.

A recurring tradition is the pilgrimage from Oberzeiring to Schöder, held every year on 1 May since the plague epidemic of 1715. The date and destination give this pilgrimage a distinct place in the annual calendar. If you are planning around this date, it is advisable to check the latest information about whether it will take place.

Theatre in Oberzeiring

Oberzeiring Theatre THEO has a black box theatre and a studio stage with a combined capacity of 180 audience members. The theatre produces six original productions per season. Its programme includes classics, world premieres, comedies and family-friendly plays. This provides a specific cultural option for a range of interests, without every performance having to appeal to the same audience. If you would like to include a theatre evening in your stay, check the programme for your preferred dates.

Trails and Winter Activities

The “Oberzeiring – Circular Hike to the Transmitter” route leads to the highest point of the ridge north of Oberzeiring. The Historic Circular Trail starts at the market square. The Mining Theme Trail has a different starting point: it begins at the Oberzeiring Show Mine Museum, at the first station by the museum shop entrance. These starting points help you choose where to begin, whether at the market square or the museum.

Oberzeiring is also the starting point for the second stage of the Mariazell Founders’ Trail. It leads over the Sommertörl to Gaal and continues to Seckau. The route description thus makes the course of this stage clear, passing through several named places. Different route information is available for a shorter circular tour, a themed trail and this stage; no walking times or difficulty ratings are provided.

Another option is the Oberzeiring leisure facility, with its newly redesigned ice rink and floodlighting. Check in advance whether the rink will be available during your planned visit. This makes the ice rink an option for your plans without assuming any specific opening hours or availability.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Oberzeiring is connected to the public transport network. The town can be reached by bus from Judenburg or Hohentauern in about 30 minutes. This is an approximate journey time; check the timetable for your specific trip. There are several car parks in the town centre, behind the church. This gives you both a named parking area and a starting point for the Historic Circular Trail at the market square to help you find your way around.
