Enzingerboden: Glacier Trails, Ski Tours and High-Alpine Terrain
Enzingerboden is a starting point for high-alpine experiences with clearly different requirements: ski tours begin at the valley station of the Weißsee Gletscherbahn, while several glacier educational trails and hiking trails can be reached via the cable car and the Rudolfshütte.
Ski Tours and Glacier Educational Trails
The ski tours in the Weißsee Gletscherwelt start at the valley station of the Weißsee Gletscherbahn in the Stubachtal valley or in Enzingerboden. From there, they lead into the ski touring area of the Granatspitz Group. This makes the location particularly interesting for travelers who want to focus their winter activities on ski tours. This does not imply a documented offering of classic ski slopes or groomed descents; ski tours and ski-area operations should be considered separately when making a choice.
The cable car from Enzingerboden travels via the Grünsee mid-station to the mountain station near the Rudolfshütte at the Weißsee. The educational trails are therefore not located at the valley station but require the ascent to the Rudolfshütte. From there, the glacier educational trail at Sonnblick-Kees begins and takes about 3.5 hours. A second option is the glacier educational trail at Ödenwinkelkees: the route, which takes about 2.5 hours, leads from the Rudolfshütte to the glacier terminus. The two trails therefore differ not only in name but also in their documented routes and duration.
Hiking and Viewing Opportunities in the Weißsee Area
The Weißsee Gletscherwelt has more than 40 km of marked hiking trails that reach elevations of almost 3,000 m. The upper area is described as a high-alpine hiking and viewing area with glaciers and numerous peaks over 3,000 m.
For a shorter route, the family-friendly Panorama Trail is available. It is equipped with information boards, leads to the Schafbühel viewpoint and takes about 30 minutes. This also makes it possible to plan a day of your stay around a manageable hike and a specific viewpoint without making the longer glacier educational trails the main focus.
Via Ferrata, Museum and Traces in the Landscape
A via ferrata can be reached from the Rudolfshütte in about 30 minutes. Steeper sections are equipped with footholds and clamps; as a result, the via ferrata is also suitable for beginners and experienced children. This statement describes the documented accessibility of the route, not general suitability for every group or weather condition.
The visitor program of the Weißsee Gletscherwelt also includes a visit to the ÖBB Railway Power Museum in Enzingerboden at the valley station of the cable car. The glacial potholes near Enzingerboden are clearly visible traces of former glaciation. In addition, the history of the non-public Enzingerboden–Tauernmoos–Weißsee industrial cableway provides a technical connection: it was in operation from 1951 and ensured year-round access to the power station structures located in the high-alpine terrain until 2023.
