Maishofen: Culture, Cycling Routes and Hiking
Accommodation in Maishofen
Maishofen offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: the art of Anton Faistauer, cycling routes and adventure golf, as well as guided hikes and seasonal events. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether culture, cycling or a particular time of year is especially important for your trip.
Art and history connected with Anton Faistauer
Stablberg Chapel was built in 1897 and received its first frescoes by Anton Faistauer in June 1909. The time between the building’s construction and the frescoes can therefore be pinpointed precisely: the first frescoes were added twelve years after it was built. Another work by the artist is the Great Salzburg Votive Altar. It can be seen in Maishofen Parish Church on permanent loan from the Museum der Moderne Salzburg.
The Anton Faistauer Window in the community centre, which opened in 2024, also displays a selection of original works. The Anton Faistauer hiking trail complements the artworks with ten stations that illustrate the artist’s connection to Maishofen. The artist’s legacy can thus be encountered in different forms: as frescoes, an altar, a selection of original works and the subject of a trail with several stops.
Cycling and adventure golf
Maishofen is connected to the 280 km Tauern Cycle Path. There are also low-traffic, flat cycling routes around the village and through green meadows to Lake Zell. This offers different scales to consider when planning: a long cycling route with a stated overall length, and routes described by their terrain and course. You can decide whether to include a longer route in your stay or use the paths around the village and towards the lake.
Rad- & Wandergolf Maishofen comprises ten adventure golf stations along a route of about 10 km, which can be covered by bicycle or on foot. Here, the route itself is part of the offer: the stations combine adventure golf with a tour for which both ways of getting around are mentioned. Compared with the Tauern Cycle Path, what stands out here is not just the cycling connection, but also the ten stations along the approximate route.
Hiking opportunities and seasonal dates
Guided hikes are organised weekly in Maishofen from June to September. If you would like to join a guided tour, plan your visit for this period and check the relevant date in advance. The Maishofner Almfest takes place in August at Kammereggalm. If you want the festival to be a fixed part of your stay, check the specific event dates before travelling.
Another option for hikers is the golden Maishofen Hiking Pin, which can be earned by collecting a total of 20 hiking points. This sets the award apart from a single guided hike or the August festival: here, the total number of hiking points counts. Guided hikes, an event date and the hiking pin therefore represent different priorities when planning.
Summit views and scenery
From a summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Pinzgau grass mountains, the Leogang Steinberge, the Steinernes Meer, the Hochkönig, the glaciers of the Hohe Tauern and Lake Zell. The panorama therefore encompasses a range of landscapes: grass-covered mountains and mountain ranges, as well as glaciers and a lake. Complementing the cultural sites and activities on the trails, the panoramic view offers a distinct way to experience the landscape.
