Mandling offers several distinct reasons to stay: tours at the Steiner1888 Loden manufactory, protected historic sites, trails on foot and by bike, and tastings at the Mandlberggut mountain café. The routes also have different points of reference. The circular trail follows the Mandlingbach to a reservoir; the first stage of the Panorama Trail 100 starts in Mandling and leads to Ramsau; the Enns Trail passes through the village.

Tours, Monuments and Tastings

Steiner1888’s Loden manufactory offers tours showing how high-quality Loden fabrics are made from natural raw materials. If you are interested in materials and production, this is a clearly defined activity; arrange your preferred tour time in advance. The Paßanlage, Paß Mandling, is protected as a historic monument in Mandling under an official decision. The Franzosenkreuz is protected under a regulation. The different names and legal bases for protection help distinguish the two sites.

Tastings are held at the Mandlberggut mountain café. This adds another activity in its own right to the tour and the protected sites. Depending on your interests, you can focus your stay on the production process for Loden fabrics, monuments or a tasting.

Hiking: Circular Trail and Stages

The Mandling circular trail starts at the Gasthof Geringer and follows the Mandlingbach to an idyllic reservoir. The stream and reservoir mark the route with specific landscape features; if you are looking for a waterside trail with a named destination, they are useful landmarks. The first stage of the Panorama Trail 100 also starts in Mandling, leads over the Vorberg to Ramsau, and therefore differs in its route and stated stage destination.

The Enns Trail Gleiming–Mandling passes through Mandling and then runs near the Enns through a beautiful lowland forest. To choose between the hiking trails, you can compare the routes described: the circular route along the Mandlingbach to the reservoir, the stage over the Vorberg to Ramsau, or the section near the Enns through lowland forest. This lets you make your choice based on the respective waypoints and landscapes mentioned.

Cycling and Getting Your Bearings

The first stage of the Enns Cycle Path from Flachauwinkl to Schladming reaches Mandling. There, the route passes under the B 146 and crosses the Mandlingbach. The underpass and stream crossing are specific landmarks to help you follow the cycle route through the village. A large area of bog also lies near Mandling, where peat is still cut. This landscape feature adds another aspect of the surrounding area to the route descriptions.
