Bad Gastein combines a history of winter sports with thermal water, distinctive architecture and travel options that can also be planned without driving your own car.

Winter guidance for choosing your accommodation

Bad Gastein hosted the 1958 World Ski Championships. This event marked the town’s breakthrough as a winter sports destination. For getting to a day of skiing, a direct transfer is particularly useful: it connects Bad Gastein railway station with the Felsentherme thermal spa and the valley station of the Stubnerkogel cable car.

Arriving by train and planning each day

Direct trains run every hour from Bad Gastein railway station to Salzburg, Vienna, Munich, Frankfurt, Graz, Zagreb and other cities. This is particularly interesting for travellers who do not want to base their accommodation choice solely on arriving by car. For groups with different interests, this arrangement can help organise shared and separate daily plans more clearly.

Thermal water as a distinct part of your trip

The thermal water of Bad Gastein emerges from 17 springs. It yields around five million litres per day and has a temperature of 44 to 47°C. Radon therapy has been provided at the Radon Thermal Steam Bath in Bad Gastein since 1825; the town also has a small radon thermal steam bath in the centre. The Felsentherme is located at around 1,100 metres above sea level and is one of Austria’s highest thermal spas. There, eight different saunas and steam baths offer relaxation across 600 m² with views of the surrounding mountains.

Waterfall, Belle Époque and museum

The Bad Gastein waterfall plunges through the centre of town in three stages, with a total drop of 341 metres. The distinctive history of the town also includes the stone waterfall bridge: it was built in 1840 and extended in 1927. The townscape is characterised by distinctive Belle Époque architecture, offering a markedly different way to experience the area than a destination focused solely on the ski slopes.

The Gastein Museum explores thermal water, the history of the spa, local customs and a picture gallery. Free audio guides are available in English and Italian. A two-hour guided tour of the museum visits a glacial mill, the historic town centre, the thermal spring park, and the parish church and St Nicholas Church. This allows you to structure your stay even when not all travellers share the same interests in winter sports and cable cars.

More experiences beyond a day of skiing

Flying Waters is a 300-metre-long ride on rollers along a wire cable over a gorge in Bad Gastein. The Zirbenwanderweg is a 1.5-kilometre circular trail that starts and ends at the mountain station of the Graukogel lift. Stone pines grow on Graukogel, some of them more than 300 years old.

The Gastein Healing Gallery lies deep inside the Radhausberg near Böckstein in former gold mines; a special form of therapy is now offered there. This adds another distinct focus to the town’s range of winter sports, thermal facilities, landscapes and regional history.

Find accommodation that matches your priorities

If you are looking for a ski hotel or other accommodation for a skiing holiday in Bad Gastein, decide before comparing options which connections matter to your group. Winter sports enthusiasts can include proximity to the valley station of the Stubnerkogel cable car in their planning. Those who want to combine time together with non-skiers can also consider the Felsentherme, museum, waterfall and facilities in the town centre. Families and mixed groups should consider each person’s daily interests separately and then check which specific accommodation location provides the desired routes. For further guidance, you can also compare Lammertal, Filzmoos, Radstadt, Pfarrwerfen, Harbach, Niedernfritz and Tenneck.
