Altenmarkt im Pongau: Mountain Cable Car, Winter Trails and Culture
For a winter holiday in Altenmarkt, there is more to discover than the mountain ride itself: winter trails, a stage route, and destinations focused on water, nature and culture round out the options. The main differences lie in the route structure and the type of stay involved.
This gives you specific options to choose from when planning your day: a direct mountain ride to a high-altitude destination, a cleared winter trail through the landscape, or a route leading from Altenmarkt in three stages via Sattelbauer and Penkkopf; the Zauchbach Trail is designated as a certified winter hiking trail.
Mountain Cable Car and Winter Trails
The 10-person Hochbifang gondola takes you directly from Altenmarkt to the Kemahdhöhe at an altitude of 1,561 metres.
In Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, 49 kilometres of cleared winter hiking trails lead through snow-covered forests and to views of the valley and alpine pastures. The Zauchbach Trail is designated as a certified winter hiking trail. Snow-covered forests and views of the valley and alpine pastures characterize the cleared trails.
The Stoneman Taurista is designed as a three-stage route and leads from Altenmarkt via Sattelbauer and Penkkopf. On a stage route, the trail is divided into several sections; this structure differs from that of an individual winter hiking trail.
The direct connection from Altenmarkt to the Kemahdhöhe contrasts spatially with a network of trails that leads through forests and directs views towards the valley and alpine pastures. When choosing your destination for the day, it is therefore crucial whether you are planning a direct mountain ride to a high-altitude destination, a cleared trail through the winter landscape, or a route consisting of several stages.
Water, Nature and Mobility
The Erlebnis-Therme Amadé is located in Altenmarkt im Pongau. It has a sports pool with a water climbing wall.
The Ennsel public open space has walking paths. The Ennsel floodplain areas provide habitats for animal and plant species. Floodplain areas are areas that can absorb water during high water levels. The sports pool with a water climbing wall and the open space with walking paths therefore have different focuses.
With the Guest Mobility Ticket, all public buses in SalzburgerLand can be used free of charge. Its validity is therefore not limited to Altenmarkt but covers the entire SalzburgerLand region.
History and Living Tradition
The Altenmarkt Bruderhaus was first mentioned in official records in 1408 and became a museum in 1970.
The Altenmarkt Madonna has been in Altenmarkt since 1393. Its presence in the town therefore predates the first official mention of the Bruderhaus.
The Pongau Perchten procession is a masked custom held around Epiphany. Every four years around Epiphany, Altenmarkt’s masked figures take part in the Pongau Perchten procession, which features a total of 280 different figures. The Altenmarkt masked figures therefore do not take part every year but are part of the procession on this four-year cycle.
