Sankt Martin: Nature, Trails and Winter Activities
Accommodation in Sankt Martin
Sankt Martin combines nature by the water, hiking, swimming and local history; in Harmanschlag, the Arra lifts’ family ski area and cross-country ski trails add to the attractions. The archery course of the ARRA Bogensportclub Harmanschlag starts right in the village of Harmanschlag, next to the Arra lifts, covers 10.5 hectares and runs mostly through woodland.
Hiking along the Lainsitz
The “Lainsitz near Sankt Martin” Natura Trail is a hiking experience in a Natura 2000 protected area on the Green Belt. Along the Lainsitz, it passes through floodplain meadows and a small-scale, extensively farmed cultural landscape of fields, rocky knolls, terraced field edges, hedgerows and near-natural mixed forests.
Natura Trail routes start at Harmanschlag village square or Steinbach-Bad GroĂźpertholz railway station and take between two and five hours, depending on the route. The Waldviertel narrow-gauge railway runs into the municipality of Sankt Martin as far as Steinbach-Bad GroĂźpertholz railway station. Before your trip, check the conditions for your specific route and choose a time frame suited to the planned distance.
Another route option is the “Nebelstein Route.” It runs from Sankt Martin along the Lainsitz and the narrow-gauge railway before climbing towards the Nebelstein. The route therefore changes from a section alongside the river and railway to a climb in the direction of the Nebelstein.
Winter in Harmanschlag
The Arra lifts’ family ski area in Harmanschlag has three drag lifts, floodlighting and snow cannons. The Arra lifts also have 25 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails through snow-covered forests. The lifts and trails offer different ways to spend a winter’s day on skis.
Winter operations are seasonal, and snow conditions can change. Check the latest operating information and conditions for your travel dates. This will help you choose between the ski area and the cross-country trails to suit your planned stay.
Swimming at the St. Martin natural swimming pond
The St. Martin natural swimming pond offers opportunities for swimming and bathing. Two beach volleyball courts and a barbecue area round out the facilities. The kiosk is open on fine-weather days in summer; if you plan to visit, bear in mind this seasonal, weather-dependent condition.
Church and local dining
The parish church of Sankt Martin was probably founded by Hadmar II of Kuenring, who died in 1217, and was originally built in the Romanesque style. The church retains a Romanesque double window, a Gothic single-light tracery window and a Romanesque sacristy added to the north side of the tower. The architectural features show both Romanesque and Gothic forms in one building.
The farm shop at Erlebnis Stein&Garten – Anderl am Berg offers Angus beef specialities as well as products from the kitchen, farm and garden. After a guided tour, the farm serves Angus beef delicacies and homemade fruit juices in its snack station. Check the farm shop’s availability before visiting.
