Kukmirn: Apple Culture and Gourmet Route
Accommodation in Kukmirn
Kukmirn is known as the apple village of southern Burgenland. The B62 Apple Cycle Route starts and ends in Kukmirn; the Orchard Nature Trail and the “Enjoyment in Uhudlerland” Gourmet Route also offer ways to shape your stay around your own interests.
Cycle Route and Gourmet Route
The B62 Apple Cycle Route is 45.1 kilometres long, starts and ends in Kukmirn, and, according to the route book, is ridden clockwise. Check route conditions before setting off. Kukmirn is also a stop on the “Enjoyment in Uhudlerland” Gourmet Route. It can be explored by car, and individual sections can also be covered by bicycle. This makes a practical difference when choosing an activity: the B62 is a cycle route with a specified length, while the Gourmet Route is explored by car, with the option of cycling some sections.
Fruit Growing and Views
The Orchard Nature Trail in Kukmirn presents more than 400 hectares of fruit-growing areas in Kukmirn on a reduced scale. The area refers to the fruit-growing land depicted, not to the length of the trail. Particularly fine dessert apples thrive on Kukmirn’s sun-drenched terraces. While the trail highlights the scale of fruit growing, the terraces show where the dessert apples are cultivated. After a climb, the Williams Pear Loop offers a view north across the Zickental valley.
Fruit Products and Distilleries
Local businesses approach the subject of fruit in different ways. For 30 years, Apfelhof Flieder has been making schnapps from its own fruit. Tastings of the farm’s own products are offered in the Apfelhof Flieder farm shop; check opening hours before your visit. At the Puchas Distillery in Kukmirn, spirits have been distilled for decades. Guided tours with a tasting are offered at the Puchas Show Distillery three times a week at 4:30 p.m. and last about 1.5 hours. Check the schedule before your visit. At Obstgut Hoanzl, visitors can taste, view and purchase products related to agricultural fruit production. The offerings differ in format: Flieder and Hoanzl focus on products made from fruit, while Puchas combines a tasting with a tour at a specified time.
Historical Connections
The Catholic Parish Church of St. Joseph in Kukmirn also offers a historical connection. It was built between 1760 and 1765, placing its construction in the second half of the 18th century. This means that trip-planning options range from cycle routes and fruit growing to regional produce and local history. Sunday services in the Protestant parish of Kukmirn are scheduled for 9 a.m. from July until the first week of September, and for 10 a.m. at other times. Check the times before your visit.
