Skiing in North Macedonia

• Popova Šapka (Попова Шапка) is a ski resort in the North Macedonian part of the Šar Mountains, also known as Šar Planina (Шар Планина).
• The local ski association lists a paved mountain road from Tetovo to the ski resort; it is 18 kilometres long.
• The Popova Šapka and Slavija hotels are located at the ski resort at elevations of about 1,707 and 1,780 metres, respectively.

Popova Šapka is in the Šar Mountains, known locally in Macedonian as Šar Planina. The Ski Association of North Macedonia describes the area as a winter sports centre above Tetovo and lists an 18-kilometre paved mountain road connecting the town to the ski resort. According to the same description, the Popova Šapka and Slavija hotels are located at elevations of about 1,707 and 1,780 metres. Staying overnight on the mountain offers a different starting point from travelling up from Tetovo.

The ski area is located on the high Šar ridge, whose peaks stretch across North Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania. Titov Vrv reaches 2,748 metres and towers above the rest of the Šar Mountains.

For skiing in Mavrovo, the specific destination is the Zare Lazarevski ski centre. Mavrovo National Park places it on the slopes of the Bistra Mountains, near Lake Mavrovo. This distinguishes the actual winter sports area from the much larger landscape of the national park. The surroundings are shaped by the lake, wooded mountain slopes and high-altitude terrain; the wider park also includes the Šar and Korab mountains and the Radika Gorge.

The Bistra Mountains have alpine ski runs and cross-country trails. The Mirna Dolina cross-country route is 7.5 kilometres long.
