Key facts

For a week of skiing in Styria, the key decision is whether to focus on the connected ski mountains around Schladming or the high-alpine Dachstein experience. The 4-Berge-Skischaukel links Hauser Kaibling, Planai, Hochwurzen and Reiteralm. Each of the four areas has its own valley access points, while ski buses connect the valley towns. The Dachstein cable car’s valley station is above Ramsau.

Four connected mountains, four valley access points

At Hauser Kaibling, you can start from the valley stations in Haus im Ennstal. The Planai main cable car and Planai West are in Schladming; the Hochwurzen summit lift serves the area near Rohrmoos. At Reiteralm, the access points in Pichl are among the main options. The starting locations are therefore more varied than the shared regional name might suggest. Accommodation in Schladming is close to the Planai access points, while staying in Haus, Rohrmoos or Pichl means making your own way to the local valley station.

The mountains are linked by pistes and lifts; a ski bus also runs between their valley stations. This is useful if your accommodation and preferred starting point are in different places, or if your group wants to start at different mountains. When planning your day, consider both the connections on the mountain and the journey from your accommodation to the valley station. The Dachstein is a different winter destination

The Dachstein Glacier is reached by cable car from Ramsau am Dachstein. As of 30 October 2026, downhill skiing there is suspended. Winter activities include ski touring, cross-country skiing and freestyle. This makes the high-alpine area different from the linked downhill circuit across the four Schladming mountains. If you’re planning a trip to the Dachstein, allow for a separate access route and a distinct range of winter activities.

The route goes via Ramsau; the glacier bus also departs from Planet Planai in Schladming, among other places. A visit to the Dachstein is therefore a high-alpine excursion rather than a tour of the four mountain ski areas.
