2011 Biathlon World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk
The 2011 Biathlon World Championships will take place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, from March 3 to 13. The new champions will be crowned in a total of eleven events in this hugely popular winter sport. Once again, the German Ski Association (DSV) athletes are among the leading contenders for the coveted gold, silver and bronze medals in the heart of Siberia.
A medal haul for the women?
German fans can especially look forward to a veritable medal haul from the women, with Andrea Henkel set to travel to the Biathlon World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk as the World Cup leader. Magdalena Neuner and Miriam Gössner are also eyeing at least one world title, as are Arnd Peiffer and Michael Greis in the men’s events.

Skiing in Russia
Skiing in Russia is not yet as popular as it is in this part of the world, but biathlon in particular enjoys enormous popularity. Khanty-Mansiysk is rightly regarded as a biathlon stronghold in Russia and has been a regular fixture on the World Cup calendar for years. Despite the frigid temperatures in Siberia, conditions for athletes and fans at the biathlon in Khanty-Mansiysk are always excellent. It is therefore hardly surprising that Khanty-Mansiysk narrowly won the bid to host the 2011 Biathlon World Championships over the Czech city of Nové Město, which was the only other candidate after Minsk, Belarus, voluntarily withdrew its bid.
Biathlon in Siberia
The 2011 Biathlon World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk get under way on March 3 with the prestigious mixed relay, in which each nation fields two women and two men. Over the following ten days, champions will also be crowned in five other events in Siberia: the individual, sprint, pursuit, mass start and relay. The DSV athletes will start in every event with realistic medal hopes, though Norway’s biathletes and, of course, Russia’s are likely to be among their strongest rivals. ARD and ZDF will broadcast live from the 2011 Biathlon World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk every day.
