Key facts

Sochi lies on the Black Sea coast, at the foothills of the Greater Caucasus.
Arkhyz is located in Karachay-Cherkessia, on the eastern edge of the Western Caucasus.
Abzakovo is part of the Southern Urals; the other destinations in the Urals are geographically separate.
Sheregesh is in the Kuzbass region. Bobrovy Log, by contrast, is near Krasnoyarsk in Eastern Siberia.
Manzherok is in the Altai Republic; the Khibiny Mountains are on the Kola Peninsula.

Important travel information

The German Federal Foreign Office advises against travel to the Russian Federation (as of October 30, 2026). Among other risks, it cites drone attacks and falling debris, arbitrary detention of German nationals, and recurring airport closures and flight cancellations. The authority recommends reviewing travel plans and, where appropriate, postponing non-essential trips. Before making a decision, read the current travel and security advice from the German Federal Foreign Office.

Six widely dispersed regions

In the Caucasus, winter sports destinations around Sochi and Arkhyz lie in different subregions. Sochi is on the Black Sea in the Western Caucasus and Sochi area; Arkhyz is part of the North Caucasus. These are separate destinations, not connected ski areas.

The Urals comprise several geographically separate locations. Siberia is not a single ski region either: Sheregesh is in Kuzbass, while the Bobrovy Log fan park is in Krasnoyarsk, in Eastern Siberia. The areas in Western Siberia should therefore not be confused with Bobrovy Log.

Manzherok is in the Altai Republic; the Altai region is far from the areas in the Urals and Caucasus. The Khibiny Mountains on the Kola Peninsula form a distinct northern subregion.

Travel decisions and current conditions

Your choice depends on the specific location, how you get there, and where your accommodation is. Each of these widely dispersed regions requires a separate journey. Information about what one area offers does not apply to the others.

Snow conditions, lift operations, pistes, and access routes vary by place and time; information about one area cannot be applied to another.

Altai

Manzherok on Mount Malaya Sinyukha offers both long and shorter runs; Blagodat in Belokurikha combines red, blue and green pistes with beginner facilities and a restaurant near the lifts. A travel warning is in place for Russia.

Kola Peninsula and the Khibiny Mountains

BigWood (Большой Вудъявр) near Kirovsk extends across the north and south slopes of Aikuaiwentschorr. Green to black runs, two beginner slopes with magic carpets, wide carving runs and access to the north slope close to town define this ski area in the Khibiny Mountains.

North Caucasus

Elbrus, Arkhyz and Dombai lie in separate valleys of the North Caucasus. The landscape is shaped by Elbrus’s twin summits and glacial rivers, Arkhyz’s river setting and mountain trails, and Dombai’s location in the Teberda Nature Reserve. The travel warning remains important.

Sheregesh and Bobrovy Log

Sheregesh in Gornaya Shoriya has three sectors with long mountain runs, including Elena and Mustag. Bobrovy Log, near Krasnoyarsk in the Eastern Sayan Mountains, has 14 pistes, a practice slope and a longest run of 1,500 metres.

Urals

Abzakovo lies on the Kulsagady River in the Kryktytau Mountains, while Gubakha is on Krestovaya. Bannoye offers longer main runs and a beginner area; Solnechnaya Dolina has children’s and sports runs. In October 2026, the Federal Foreign Office warned against travel to Russia.

Western Caucasus and Sochi

Ski resorts near Krasnaya Polyana, close to Sochi: Rosa Khutor and Alpika are on Aibga, while Laura is on the Psekhako Plateau. The separate resorts differ in elevation, wooded slopes and open cirques. Includes a dated travel advisory.
