Munich in decisive phase for the 2018 Olympics

Candidate city Munich is now entering the crucial phase of its bid to host the 2010 Winter Olympic Games: Following its selection as a candidate city for the 2018 Olympics (as we reported), the Bavarian capital must submit further application documents, known as the “Bid Book,” to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by January 11, 2011.

2018 Olympics: Munich must answer questions

In the Bid Book, Munich—which plans to host a number of competitions, including in Garmisch-Partenkirchen—must answer various questions over nearly 500 pages. These questions cover key points on a range of topics, such as sport, the Olympic legacy, communications, the vision for the Games, venues, transport infrastructure, culture, accommodation (hotels, holiday apartments and holiday homes), anti-doping controls, medical care, security, politics and the economy.

Guarantees from the candidate cities

The IOC also requires more than 100 guarantees, which must be provided by Munich, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Free State of Bavaria, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Berchtesgadener Land district. The Bid Book will serve as the basis for an inspection visit by a commission of the International Olympic Committee. This visit is scheduled to take place either in February or March 2011. Following its site visits to the candidate cities, the commission will prepare a dossier to be forwarded to the IOC Session. This dossier, together with the candidate cities’ presentations, will be a decisive factor in the IOC Session’s selection of the host city, which will take place on July 6, 2011, in Durban, South Africa. This is decision day: afterwards, it will be clear which city or region will be allowed to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Munich can count on the support of regional hotels and owners of holiday apartments and holiday homes in the Munich and Upper Bavaria region.
