Ski accommodation: location, types and booking

When choosing ski accommodation, the type of room is not the only factor that determines your holiday. The combination of location, daily travel, amenities and travel group matters most. The right choice depends on who is travelling, how much time you plan to spend on the slopes, and whether self-catering, service or shared living space is important. Prices, availability and specific services vary by provider and travel date; the details in the individual booking are binding.

Check the location in terms of your daily routine

“Close to the slopes” or “central” does not always tell you how easy the journey will actually be with luggage, children and ski boots. Check the address on a map and find out whether the lift, ski bus, railway station, parking, ski school and rental shop are within walking distance or reachable by reliable transport. If necessary, ask about elevation changes, stops and seasonal timetables. A location a little farther away may still work if the connection to the ski area is reliable and its cost is included in the total price.

In countries with many accommodation destinations, you can compare options in Austria, Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland. You should then check the location of each individual property separately; a region name alone says nothing about the distance to the valley station.

Which type of accommodation suits your trip?

Holiday apartment: a good choice if you want to prepare your own meals, keep flexible hours and have a living area of your own. Check the kitchen facilities, sleeping arrangements, final cleaning, bed linen and any extra charges.

Hotel: can make day-to-day life easier if you need breakfast, a restaurant, reception or a drying room. What matters is which services are included in the specific rate and which cost extra.

Chalet or holiday home: often provides a shared living area for families or groups. Before booking, check the capacity, bedroom layout, winter access, parking and distance to shops and transport.

Mountain hut or basic accommodation: may suit travellers looking for a simple overnight stay in a particular location. Check the amenities, accessibility, food options and house rules carefully; the name alone does not guarantee a particular standard.

Plan differently for families, couples and groups

Families should check sleeping arrangements, somewhere to put wet clothes, breakfast times, cots and the route to the ski school. For groups, enough bathrooms, shared living space and a clear division of costs are important. Couples may prefer peace and quiet, short distances or accommodation in town. All travellers should consider whether they want to spend the day together or need different start times and activities.

For longer stays, laundry facilities, shops and a dry place for clothes and shoes also matter. If you are travelling by car, check the access road and parking situation; without a car, shops, bus stops and transfers are more important. Travellers with limited mobility should confirm access, stairs, lifts and the actual routes directly before making a binding booking.

Compare total costs, not just the nightly rate

Include travel, parking, ski buses, meals, cleaning, deposits and any fees in your comparison. With a holiday apartment, you will need to arrange meals yourself; with a hotel, check which meals are actually included. A low base price may change once additional services are included. So compare offers using the same travel dates, number of guests and assumptions about services.

Read the booking conditions before paying

Check arrival and departure times, the payment schedule, cancellation rules, deposit, pet policy and how last-minute changes are handled. Ask questions if the description, map location and confirmed amenities do not match. For availability, ski-pass combinations, shuttle services or meals, do not rely on general information about the area: the confirmed services of the individual provider are what count.

To choose your destination, compare ski regions by access and type of trip. Practical advice on dates, travel and budget is available in the ski holiday planning tips. If you want several travel services arranged together, you can also include a ski holiday package in your comparison.
