Plenty of Ski World Cup Action in Styria in January

Holiday apartments and hotels in Styria are currently receiving a flood of booking enquiries from skiers and winter sports fans from all over Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. Styria and its well-known ski resorts such as Haus, Schladming and Bad Mitterndorf owe this not only to weather conditions that are very favourable for all kinds of winter sports, but above all to the many top-class ski events taking place in Styria over the coming days and weeks. Anyone hoping to secure a vacant room in the Styrian ski resorts of Haus, Schladming or Bad Mitterndorf should therefore hurry.

Skifliegen am Kulm
Skispringen ist in Österreich ein Volkssport.

It all gets underway next weekend with the traditional ski-flying competition at Kulm in Bad Mitterndorf, where jumps and flights of 200 metres or more are expected. Ski jumping and ski flying have been popular sports in Austria for a long time—not just since the successes at the Four Hills Tournament, which has just come to an end. Andreas Kofler, Gregor Schlierenzauer, Wolfgang Loitzl & Co enjoy pop-star status in Austria, so a large and lively crowd is expected in Bad Mitterndorf.

Just a few kilometres from Kulm in Bad Mitterndorf, the alpine skiing ladies will take to the start next weekend, with a World Cup downhill race scheduled in Haus im Ennstal. It will be the first Ski World Cup in Haus im Ennstal in six years. At the last downhill race there, in 2004, a certain Maria Riesch celebrated her first World Cup victory; she is among the favourites again this year. The alpine Ski World Cup in Styria will then wrap up on 26 January with the night slalom in Schladming, which creates a very special atmosphere every year.

But Styria has another highlight in January beyond winter sports. Several matches of the men's European Handball Championship will be played in the capital, Graz, where the team coached by Heiner Brand can legitimately hope to win the title. In the coming weeks, Bad Mitterndorf, Haus, Schladming and Graz therefore have an event to suit every taste, and snow is guaranteed in much of Styria anyway.
