Ski World Cup moves to Schladming

The Alpine Ski World Cup was due to take place in Levi, Finland, this weekend. But Frau Holle was nowhere to be seen. There is not enough snow, so plans had to be changed at short notice. Reiteralm, near Schladming, will host the event instead of Levi.

Conveniently located Reiteralm

Skiing has been underway for weeks at conveniently located Reiteralm. High-performance snowmaking facilities are ready to go and have been in operation since mid-October. The Styrian slalom courses are prepared. The event should therefore be able to go ahead as scheduled on 10–11 November. The women's slalom is set for Saturday, with the men's event starting on Sunday. And, according to the weather forecast, Frau Holle seems set to cooperate this time, too.

Schladming ski resort

The Schladming ski resort is delighted to host the Alpine Ski World Cup race. However, the event has to be organized in an extremely short time. The FIS decision to move it to Reiteralm was only made over the weekend, leaving the organizers just a few days to do what usually takes weeks of preparation. Around 300 staff are working virtually around the clock. Things can get hectic.

A blessing for Styria

But all this effort should pay off. The Austrian television broadcast is unique publicity for the ski resort—a blessing for tourism throughout Styria. Hosting the World Cup race is expected to cost several hundred thousand euros, but the benefits are estimated to be many times greater.

Of course, Levi is in a difficult position. The losses for the Finnish ski region are painful. Initial estimates put them at around 5–10 million euros. That's the flip side of the coin.
