Alpine roads already closed
Snowfall is expected relatively early this year. The first Alpine roads in Germany will soon be closed too. According to ADAC reports, the Swiss Great St. Bernard Pass is no longer passable. Italy’s Gavia Pass between Ponte di Legno and Bormio is also closed.
Alpine passes are still open
Most major Alpine passes are still open. The Maltatal Hochalm Road in Austria’s Carinthia region will close from October 29. More Alpine roads will soon be closed. In Austria, the Großglockner High Alpine Road, Nockalm Road, Staller Sattel and Timmelsjoch are expected to follow by early November. The same applies to the French Little St. Bernard Pass. In Switzerland, the Furka, Grimsel and Susten passes are expected to close by early November.

Precise forecasts
It is not possible to predict exactly when Alpine roads will close, as weather conditions play a major role. Mountain regions and ski resorts in particular are often hit by unexpected winter weather. A pass can therefore close at any time. Automobile clubs provide information about the condition of Alpine roads. For those driving to their destination, however, this is only a small consolation. Weather conditions in the Alps can change at short notice at any time. The only thing to do is stay informed.
Winter equipment required for cars
But even on Alpine roads marked “open,” you should have winter equipment for your car from October to May. This includes winter tires, a tow rope, an ice scraper and jumper cables. Snow chains may also be required on pass roads. They should be stored somewhere easy to reach, along with a lamp and gloves. You should practice fitting snow chains for the first time in daylight and warm weather. This can help avoid stress on the way to a well-deserved ski holiday.
