The residents of Lenzerheide voted against linking the neighbouring Swiss ski resorts of Lenzerheide-Valbella and Arosa with help of ski lifts. There were some plans to complete this connection that would create one of the largest Swiss ski areas by the 2009-10 winter season.
Recently all the local communities voted in order to make general decision upon this matter. The majority of the inhabitants of the smaller Arosa ski area (84% of total population) voted in favor of the Lenzerheide-Valbella-Arosa connection. Though almost 60% of the residents of the Vaz/Obervaz ski area located around Lenzerheide that is almost three times bigger than Arosa voted agains the linking.
Arosa’s tourist office spokesperson expressed regret according such results of the vote. He said that Vaz/Obervaz inhabitants reluctance of creating one of the biggest ski areas in the country providing guests about 220 km of pistes and more than 50 lifts of different kind could be caused by their doubt that such connection could be beneficial.
However, the representatives of both Arosa and Lenzerheide ski areas are not going to surrender and are likely to propose some new joint project in the nearest future. At the moment the above mentioned resorts already have common projects- for instance, they offer a lift ticket shared with a bus shuttle.
