Chelan County: Mission Ridge, Stehekin and Trails at Lake Chelan

If you are looking for a clearly defined range of ski runs for your skiing holiday, Mission Ridge is a specific point of reference: The ski area has 36 designated runs and is located in a 2,000-acre basin on the eastern side of the Cascade Mountains. Chelan County combines this winter focus with distinctly different forms of travel. In Stehekin, skiing or snowshoeing are among the winter activities; at the same time, hiking, fishing and wildlife viewing are central year-round activities there.

Winter Activities and Different Forms of Travel

Mission Ridge is the clearly defined skiing focus with its 36 runs. This figure describes the range of ski runs but makes no statement about current openings, snow depths or the proximity of a particular accommodation. Stehekin, by contrast, offers a different kind of winter experience: In addition to skiing and snowshoeing, you can also hike, fish and observe wildlife there outside winter. Seasonal boating complements the activities available year-round.

Stehekin: Special Access and Trails by the Lake

Stehekin has no road connection. From outside, you can reach the community on foot, by boat or by plane. The Lake Chelan Boat Company offers round-trip service between Chelan and Stehekin, with scheduled stops at Fields Point and Lucerne. This access situation clearly distinguishes Stehekin from a typical road journey and should be taken into account when choosing accommodation or a place to stay.

Stehekin serves as a starting point for exploring the 61,949-acre Lake Chelan National Recreation Area. A 17-mile trail runs along the northern shore of Lake Chelan from Prince Creek to Stehekin and is accessible by boat. A scenic loop trail is approximately 4.4 miles long and offers views of the Stehekin Valley and Lake Chelan. Another trail follows the Stehekin River and provides access to several scenic spots along the river; it is approximately 7 miles each way.

Hiking Areas with Different Levels

Outside Stehekin, you will also find trails with different profiles. Echo Ridge has more than 25 miles of trails ranging from easy to challenging and offers views of Lake Chelan and the surrounding mountains. The Sage Hills trail system includes trails for all skill levels; in spring, flowers and expansive views of the Wenatchee Valley add to the experience. The information therefore helps distinguish between an area with explicitly varied levels of difficulty and a trail system that caters to all skill levels.

Water, Landscapes and Regional Experiences

At Lake Chelan State Park, you can hike, cycle, play volleyball, swim, fish and camp. Boating, fishing, water skiing and windsurfing are also listed there. Wenatchee Confluence State Park lies on both sides of the Wenatchee River at its confluence with the Columbia River and offers a distinct landscape focus.

For cultural and historical impressions, visit the Buckner Homestead Historic District at a horseshoe-shaped bend in the Stehekin River within the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area. Cashmere Pioneer Village includes furnished authentic local log cabins, a waterwheel and several Great Northern Railway buildings; the grounds are suitable for picnics. The Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum also offers a nutcracker hunt created by the “Nutcracker Lady.”

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Priorities

The destinations in the county do not represent a uniform accommodation or ski-area profile. If ski runs are your priority, Mission Ridge provides the specific skiing connection. If you are looking for a combination of remote access, trails and winter activities, Stehekin should be viewed differently because of its lack of a road connection and its stated access options.

For food and regional products, the North Central Washington Food & Farm Trail is a self-guided route through the eight communities of Chelan County. It connects orchards where you can pick your own fruit, cideries, farm stores and farm-to-table restaurants. Cashmere Museum and Pioneer Village offers guided group tours led by museum staff; advance reservations are required for all group tours. For another destination comparison, you can also visit Leavenworth.
