Fayette County combines architectural and historic sites with river and hiking experiences. Key highlights include Fallingwater, the homes and places along the National Road, and activities in Ohiopyle State Park. When planning your trip, it’s worth prioritizing your interests first: an architecture tour offers a different focus than a hiking trail or a trip down the river.

Architecture and Guided Visits

Fallingwater is a cultural attraction in Fayette County. Frank Lloyd Wright built the house in 1936 for department store owner Edgar J. Kaufmann. It is designated a National Historic Landmark and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. A guided architecture tour explores the interplay of architecture and nature across the wooded grounds, inside the house, and on its exterior cantilevered terraces. This directs attention not only to the building but also to how it was designed in relation to its surroundings. Tour dates and booking policies may change; check them before your visit.

Kentuck Knob is also an architectural attraction in Fayette County designed by Wright, and an example of his Usonian architecture. The guided house tour includes the interior and exterior of the house and is led by a tour guide. Kentuck Knob also has a sculpture collection along a walking path, featuring works by contemporary artists including Sir Anthony Caro and Andy Goldsworthy. Access conditions for the grounds may change. If you’d like to visit the house and sculpture path, take the applicable access conditions into account.

History Along the National Road

Mount Washington Tavern is now a museum about life along the National Road. Searights Tollhouse is part of the National Road Heritage Corridor and is maintained by the Fayette County Historical Society. Both places offer a tangible connection to the road’s history, but have different focuses: the museum explores life along the route, while the tollhouse is part of the Heritage Corridor.

Friendship Hill is Albert Gallatin’s restored estate. It highlights his achievements and contributions to the country he adopted as his home. This visit adds a personal historical perspective to the story of architecture and transportation. Instead of choosing places only by their names, consider whether you’re particularly interested in architecture, life along the National Road, or Gallatin’s story.

River Activities and Hiking Trails

Ohiopyle State Park is in Fayette County and serves as a gateway to the Laurel Highlands. Whitewater rafting on the Youghiogheny River in the park is possible for all experience levels. At Meadow Run, visitors can slide down two natural water slides in the streambed; be sure to take the natural hazards of the terrain into account. The two creek and river activities are quite different: one focuses on whitewater rafting on the river, while the other involves sliding down natural features in the creek bed.

Five miles of hiking trails around Fort Necessity pass through woods and meadows. Jumonville Glen also has a hiking trail, along with interpretive panels; the site is open seasonally from May 1 through October 31. If you’re planning a trip along the Sheepskin Trail, you can visit the Dunbar Historical Society Education Center on Saturdays. Since Saturday hours may change, check whether it’s open before you go.

Trail Planning and Getting There

The Sheepskin Trail is 32 miles long; the documented section is its first part. An extension through the center of Fayette County to Point Marion is planned. A connection at the state line to the West Virginia Rail-Trail System is also planned. These connections are future projects, not routes that already exist. When planning, it’s important to distinguish between the existing first section and the planned extensions.

Visitors need a car to get to Fallingwater; there is no public transportation there. Transportation options may change, so check the latest information on getting there before your visit. Overall, the options here range from guided architecture and house tours to river activities and paths through woods and meadows. Plan around the visits that matter most to you, and check the specific conditions for seasonal or scheduled activities.
