For a stay in Monroe, you can organize natural attractions and cultural sites according to your interests. The offerings vary considerably: alongside trails, lakes and outdoor activities, there are museums, local history and individual recreational activities. For activities that require reservations, operate seasonally or have scheduled event dates, it’s a good idea to check the relevant details in advance.

Parks, Lakes and Trails

Gouldsboro State Park is located in Monroe and Wayne Counties in northeastern Pennsylvania. It covers 2,800 acres and includes 250-acre Gouldsboro Lake. Tobyhanna State Park covers 5,440 acres and includes 170-acre Tobyhanna Lake. This makes it possible to compare the parks and lakes by size: Tobyhanna is larger in area, while Gouldsboro Lake is larger than Tobyhanna Lake. These figures provide a specific point of reference for the two park landscapes, without implying a walking time or similar itinerary.

Big Pocono State Park covers 1,306 acres of the summit and slopes of Camelback Mountain and offers views of three states. The Indian Trail is considered the easiest hiking trail in the park; it offers views from the eastern cliffs. The Lakeside Trail offers a different kind of trail experience: it runs all the way around Tobyhanna Lake and provides opportunities for wildlife watching and fishing. The named trails therefore differ in their stated features: the Indian Trail in its difficulty rating and cliff views, and the Lakeside Trail in its route around the lake and the activities mentioned.

The Appalachian National Scenic Trail runs for more than 20 miles through Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The McDade Recreational Trail extends across most of the area, from Hialeah Recreation Area to Milford Beach. It offers opportunities for hiking, biking and cross-country skiing. For the Appalachian Trail, the length of the section passing through the area provides a point of reference; for the McDade Trail, it’s the named endpoints and range of uses. This information helps you consider the two trails according to the features that matter to you, without treating them as the same route.

In the park, 40 miles of the middle Delaware River are the focus of recreational activities. These include fishing, boating, canoeing and swimming. Silver Thread Falls is located along the accessible Dingmans Creek Trail; Raymondskill Falls is the tallest waterfall in Pennsylvania. If you bring your own canoe or kayak, you can use the free shuttle service provided by the Monroe County Transit Authority. Operating details may change, so check them before you set out.

History and Environmental Education

Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is a living history museum that preserves the agricultural heritage of Pennsylvania Germans in the 19th century. Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center focuses on a different subject, offering environmental education programs for people of all ages throughout the year. The themes are distinct: Quiet Valley focuses on agricultural heritage, while Kettle Creek Center focuses on environmental education.

Stroud Mansion Museum features exhibits on the history of Monroe County across four floors. Stroud Mansion was built in 1795 by Jacob Stroud. Visitors interested in the region’s history will find both a direct connection to the county’s past and a building with a documented construction date and builder. Stroud Mansion thus offers a look at its exhibits as well as the history of the building itself.

Cresco Station also has a documented history: the restored station was made available to the Barrett Township Historical Society in 1999 and then reopened as a museum for the community. Cresco Station Museum houses exhibits, artifacts and research materials from the Barrett Township area. Schisler Museum and McMunn Planetarium bring nature and astronomy together under one roof; both are currently closed.

Another historical connection is Sullivan’s Trail: the section of General John Sullivan’s famous 1778 march from Easton to New York that passes through Monroe County runs from Tannersville to Pocono Pines. In Stroudsburg, meanwhile, many original buildings from the late 18th century shape the easily walkable downtown. Today, these buildings house unique shops, art galleries and restaurants.

Activities and Events

For a specific recreational activity, Aquatopia offers private FlowRider sessions. These must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance; availability may change. Check the latest information before making firm plans for a session. Camelbeach Outdoor Waterpark offers 37 rides and slides. Since seasonal operating details may change, you should check the information before visiting here as well.

In Delaware Water Gap, the annual Celebration of the Arts Jazz Festival features local food vendors. If you’d like to plan your visit around the festival, check the event dates in advance. Downtown Stroudsburg offers a different kind of addition to your trip: historic buildings, shops, galleries and restaurants are all located in an easily walkable center. The destinations best suited to your trip therefore depend on what you’re looking for—nature, outdoor activities, history or a specific event date.
