Blowing Rock: Trails, Culture, and Winter Experiences
Accommodation in Blowing Rock
If you are looking for accommodation for a varied stay, you can choose between leisurely walks, more challenging nature trails, museums, family activities, and documented winter use of the trails. Travel is primarily via U.S. Highways 321 and 221.
Trails and Winter Activities
Moses Cone Memorial Park offers 25 miles of wide gravel trails in Blowing Rock. They are suitable for trail running, easy to moderate hiking, and horseback riding. In addition, the 25 miles of gently ascending carriage trails offer opportunities for leisurely walks. This allows you to distinguish between more peaceful walking and activity-oriented pursuits within the same park.
Most trails in Moses Cone Memorial Park are multi-use trails. Visitors may encounter horseback riders and joggers there; in winter, encounters with cross-country skiers are also possible. The trails are therefore not reserved exclusively for one activity but are used by various visitor groups. For a stay involving different interests, this mix creates a specific distinction between the individual day plans.
Two Distinct Nature Experiences
The Glen Burney Trail has a different profile from the wide trails in Moses Cone Memorial Park. The trail is 1.6 miles long and descends 600 feet, from an elevation of 3,520 feet to the base of Glen Marie Falls. New Year's Creek runs along the Glen Burney Trail; it also passes over Glen Marie Falls. The route therefore combines a clearly described elevation change with a creek and waterfall section.
The Blowing Rock is also a destination in its own right. The rock is located on the mountainside along Highway 321 South in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. The self-guided trail at The Blowing Rock is approximately half a mile long. For planning your day, this experience can therefore be distinguished from the longer trails in Moses Cone Memorial Park and the distinctly downhill Glen Burney Trail.
Geology and Culture in Blowing Rock
Blowing Rock Gneiss is 1.055 billion years old and gives the natural area a geological dimension. Flat Top Manor is also culturally significant: the building erected in Blowing Rock now houses the Parkway Craft Center.
The Blowing Rock Art & History Museum complements this focus with TAC Talks. Scientists from across the country give presentations that provide additional information about current exhibitions or explore the history and cultural heritage of the mountains. Adults can also attend studio workshops with guest instructors and various artistic media.
Activities for Children and Families
For children ages 6 to 10, the museum offers creative art activities through Afternoon Art. These take place on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. This is a clearly defined offering that differs from the adult workshops.
Tweetsie Railroad has been North Carolina's first theme park since 1957 and offers families Wild West experiences in the Blue Ridge Mountains. This adds a distinct leisure theme alongside nature, geology, and museum culture.
Local Cuisine and Comparing Locations
Blowing Rock Food & Wine Tours takes guests to local restaurants while exploring local art and history. The tour lasts three hours. If you would like to focus your stay more strongly on regional cuisine and local history, this provides a different format from a hike or a museum visit.
