When looking for a hotel in North Carolina, it makes sense to start by considering the type of trip you want. The documented destinations range from protected Atlantic landscapes and rivers to mountain nature, historic sites, and farm experiences. So first consider whether you would rather spend your days on the coast, on the water, on long trails, or in museums and memorials.

For a more regional focus, you can also consider Watauga, Haywood County, and Avery County.

Coast, Water, and Expansive Natural Areas

Cape Lookout National Seashore is home to two historic villages: Cape Village and Portsmouth Village. The protected area’s barrier islands can be reached by a three-mile boat ride from the coast. This is a clear difference from destinations located directly on land. Cape Lookout is also an International Dark Sky Park. Visitors can observe the stars independently or take part in a public astronomy program.

In addition to its preserved barrier islands, Cape Hatteras National Seashore offers some of the best spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing on the East Coast. This means that the focus of this coastal area is not only on observing the landscape but also on a specifically documented water-sports perspective.

The North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation manages more than 250,000 acres of characteristic North Carolina landscapes in parks, recreation areas, and natural areas. This provides various thematic points of connection for stays focused on nature and activity, without every area representing the same type of landscape or the same activity.

The Roanoke River State Trail begins at Roanoke Rapids Lake, follows the river to Albemarle Sound, and includes the lower sections of the Chowan River. It passes through the largest and least-disturbed lowland hardwood forest ecosystem in the Mid-Atlantic region. Camping platforms along the trail allow paddlers to spend the night by the water; reservations are required to use these campsites.

Falls Lake State Recreation Area also has more than 300 campsites. The area also includes a section of the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail. This combination connects a specific lakeside stay with part of North Carolina’s flagship state trail.

Routes for Active and History-Oriented Days

The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail is 330 miles long in total. It passes through Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina and follows the route used by Patriot militias during the Kings Mountain Campaign of 1780. The historical significance here is directly connected to the course of the trail; at the same time, the walkable section within the entire historic corridor remains limited to more than 80 miles.

Several sites provide deeper insight into the history of the American Revolutionary War. The Battle of Moores Creek National Battlefield marked the last broadsword charge by Scottish Highlanders and the first major Patriot victory in the American Revolutionary War. King’s Mountain, Cowpens, and Guilford Courthouse were part of a “chain of evils” that brought about the turning point of the war in the South and made the surprise victory at Yorktown possible.

At Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, you can use free, self-guided audio tours via the NPS app. The North Carolina Division of State Historic Sites also operates 27 unique historic sites. Museums in North Carolina are organized for trip planning according to the areas of interest of art, history, and science and are listed on a map of the state. This allows you to structure a stay around your own focus rather than planning around just one excursion destination.

From Fort Raleigh to Kitty Hawk

Fort Raleigh on Roanoke Island is considered a central site in American history. The site is also associated with the summer performance of the drama The Lost Colony. At the Wright Brothers National Memorial, visitors can explore the museum and monument. On December 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Wilbur and Orville Wright achieved the first successful airplane flights after four years of scientific experiments.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park also combines landscape and cultural history. Historic buildings such as churches, gristmills, barns, and homes give visitors an impression of life in the mountains before the national park was established. This makes it possible to view the mountain landscape not only through its plant and animal species but also through preserved evidence of earlier ways of life.

Farms, Oysters, and Regional Experiences

Agricultural operations in North Carolina that expand their business to include agritourism welcome the public and offer visitors special opportunities to learn about farms in North Carolina. This adds a direct insight into agricultural work to the nature and history themes.

The farm tours along the NC Oyster Trail showcase various techniques for producing the respective harvest and provide interactive experiences. They may also offer opportunities to eat oysters directly at their place of origin. When choosing your hotel, you can therefore first organize your trip according to your desired focus: Atlantic coast, mountain landscape, rivers, historic sites, or farm and oyster culture.
