South Dakota combines vast prairie, striking landscapes, historic sites and diverse road routes. Badlands National Park focuses on mixed-grass prairie, wildlife and roads through unusual landscapes, while the Black Hills, with their parks, scenic routes and Mount Rushmore, have a different character. For your planning, it is also important to note that not every route offers the same access.
- Badlands National Park protects 244,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie inhabited by bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs and black-footed ferrets.
- Custer State Park covers 71,000 acres in the Black Hills and offers opportunities for camping, hiking, cycling, swimming and fishing.
- When conditions are suitable, the Needles Highway is open for hiking, cycling, snowshoeing and skiing, but closed to motor vehicles.
- The Sage Creek Rim Road runs through the Sage Creek Wilderness Area and provides access to several viewpoints as well as the Sage Creek Campground.
- Wind Cave National Park has more than 30 miles of hiking trails through mixed-grass prairie and ponderosa pine forest.
- The Native American National and State Scenic Byway runs through the territories of the Yankton, Crow Creek, Lower Brule, Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Sioux tribes.
Road Routes with Different Requirements
The roads in South Dakota cannot simply be treated as equivalent. The Loop Road in Badlands National Park is a two-lane paved road suitable for all motor vehicles. The Sage Creek Rim Road, by contrast, is a gravel road through the Sage Creek Wilderness Area of Badlands National Park. The Needles Highway presents a clear contrast: when conditions are suitable, it is open for various activities, while motor vehicles are prohibited there. If you are traveling with children, equipment or different interests, this distinction is one of the practical points you can take into account when planning your daily destinations.
Along the Native American National and State Scenic Byway, you will find mixed-grass prairie, gently rolling hills and, in many places, limestone cliffs along the river. The Wildlife Loop Road passes through prairie and hills covered with ponderosa pines, which are home to numerous species of wildlife found in the park.
Nature, Wildlife and Distinctive Landscapes
In addition to mixed-grass prairie, Badlands National Park offers a fully accessible loop trail with a boardwalk, fossil replicas and exhibits about now-extinct creatures. Custer State Park, in turn, offers opportunities for hiking, cycling, swimming and fishing.
Another special attraction is The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs. It is an active paleontological excavation site with the world's largest concentration of mammoth remains.
Culture and History as a Distinct Travel Element
Mount Rushmore depicts George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The cultural landscape of Mount Rushmore is significant because of its potential for prehistoric insights, its artistic value and its connection to historical figures and events. At Good Earth State Park, you can also experience a site that is among the oldest places of long-term human habitation in the United States.
The Aktá Lakota Museum presents at least two exhibitions per year. Its gallery displays historical objects and contemporary art from a permanent collection comprising nearly 4,000 items. The tour follows Lakota history chronologically. Custer State Park hosts the annual Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival.
Practical Points for Your Planning
Advance reservations are required for all Delta-01 tours at Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. This appointment should therefore be planned separately from spontaneous visits to other destinations. The Aktá Lakota Museum does not charge admission; donations are welcome. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore better weigh whether to focus your stay on road routes, nature experiences, culture or a combination of these themes, without having to treat all daily destinations in the same way.
For an additional regional overview, you can also view Lawrence County. Other destinations at a glance include California, Illinois, Virginia, Connecticut, Nevada, Kentucky and New York.
