There are two public beaches for swimming on Lake Luzerne itself. Wayside Beach is a boat launch at the beach. A 10 hp motor limit applies there, and parking is available for 10 cars. The boat launch at Luzerne Public Beach also has a 10 hp motor limit. During the school year, there are no spaces for boat trailers because the parking lot is shared with the school. This specific restriction is important for anyone who wants to bring a boat. The water landscape extends beyond the lake. A chain of four lakes connected to Lake Luzerne offers opportunities for fishing. The Hudson River narrows into a tight gorge at Lake Luzerne and plunges over the impressive Rockwell Falls. Water from the Great Sacandaga Reservoir meets the Hudson River at Lake Luzerne amid heavy whitewater. Downstream, the section known as The Bay is wide enough for water skiing. During the Lazy River experience at Tubby Tubes, the speed and size of the rapids vary depending on the water level and current.

History, Museums and Craftsmanship

Lake Luzerne was first settled in 1767 after the French and Indian War. The Lake Luzerne Heritage District contains four historic buildings that are open seasonally. In the town center on Main Street, the chimney of the Garnar Tannery still stands. It recalls an earlier industrial period of the town, even though a complete building complex does not need to have been preserved. The Lake Luzerne Museum is located in a Victorian house furnished in the style of its period. The permanent exhibition covers the history of the Hadley/Luzerne area in the Southern Adirondacks. Topics include agriculture, logging, grand hotels, industry, dude ranches and summer camps. The Hudson River Pulp Company Museum in Old Mill Park also houses the first original wood grinder assembled in the United States. The Adirondack Folk School preserves the cultural heritage of the Adirondacks by teaching arts, crafts and traditions. You can tour the school and visit its gift shop without enrolling in a course. This makes it possible to plan a cultural stop independently of course participation.

Music and Local Specialties

In summer, the Luzerne Music Center hosts a concert series by the Luzerne Chamber Music Festival, featuring concerts by faculty members and guest artists. Since 1980, the Luzerne Music Center has been home to thousands of musicians in summer. As a result, the summer months have their own distinct musical focus in addition to the water-based activities. The historic Hitching Post is also part of the townscape. For generations, it hosted cowboys and families at dances and dinners. At the Hitching Post & Tavern, you can take part in a cheese tasting and sample homemade cheese made from goat's milk, sheep's milk and cow's milk, as well as blends of these. The cheese-focused menu is paired with American beers and wines.
