Genoa lies in the Carson River Basin at the foot of the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada. Reasons to visit range from a short interpretive loop to a 20-mile loop trail.

History and Historic Sites

Mormon Station was the site of Nevada’s first permanent non-Indigenous settlement. Mormon Station State Historic Park has an accessible, self-guided 0.5-mile interpretive loop. Exhibits and information panels explore Genoa’s history. The self-guided loop offers a different focus from the museum rooms and their exhibits.

The Genoa National Historic District includes more than 25 structures and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At the Genoa Courthouse Museum, visitors can see, among other things, a Victorian living room, a country kitchen, a blacksmith shop, a jail, and a Pony Express room. The exhibits thus cover everything from living and working spaces to incarceration and the Pony Express. Livingston’s Exchange opened in 1853 as Genoa’s first establishment of its kind and has remained a defining local fixture. The difference lies in the scale of the historical insights: the District encompasses a collection of more than 25 structures, while the Courthouse Museum displays selected rooms and exhibits. Together, they offer different perspectives: an architectural ensemble and a thematically organized museum presentation.

Trails and Distances

The Genoa Trail System offers 16 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking; the trails are also dog-friendly. The system therefore accommodates several types of use. One specific route option is the Sierra Canyon Trail: it starts at the Sierra Canyon Trail Access, runs through the Genoa Trail System, and eventually connects with the Tahoe Rim Trail. As a loop, it is 20 miles long.

The distances describe different formats: a 0.5-mile interpretive history loop, a trail system with 16 miles of trails, and a 20-mile loop.
